How did I survive | ADHD Information

. . . the first 8 years of my son's life?

The pharmacy called Sunday evening to say they didn't have his Focalin in stock and I could pick it up Monday instead.  So, no meds yesterday- and we had to run to the store since I'd already promised to send in brownies for his birthday today.

He was randomly throwing food into the cart, hitting his 6 yr. old sister whenever she tried to put something in for me and otherwise driving me (and his sister) insane.  I was expecting it, though, and I actually ended up laughing most of the way (since he was so off the wall and I knew he literally couldn't help it)- which I'm sure reinforced the idea that I was a horrible parent to the old lady who's path we kept crossing.

But then he topped himself for impulsive behavior when we reached the baking section.  I turned around to getting the brownie mix and suddenly my daughter's saying "Mommy, Jay's licking sugar off the floor!"  Sure enough, I turn around and he's on the floor, licking his fingers and running it through the spilled sugar on the nasty floor.

On the way home we stopped to pick up his meds and when he saw that I was paying for them he commented that it was a lot of money.  My response was that it's a small price to pay for sanity.  He looked at me funny, but the pharmacist (who knows us well) laughed.

And so I wonder how he's made it to his ninth birthday without me inflicting serious bodily harm on either of us?   Thank the gods for modern medicine.

Oh that is funny...perhaps you should keep a record of these crazy days and you will be able to laugh when he is 25 and out of the house.  (So sorry about licking sugar-- YUCK!).

I sent my DS to baseball practice ( the first one) without meds ...my goodness I don't think he paid attention once...everytime I saw  him he was playing in the dirt, finding rocks to throw, taking off his glove and putting it on the wrong hand or  his head, and turning his back to the batter.  One time I saw him crouching down to examine a bug.....ok this was it for us and baseball.

I'm like crying and laughing here... I totally could have written your post... the licking the sugar off the floor... OH MY GOSH hahahahahaha  I'm so glad to know I'm not the only "horrible mother" LOL  I often wonder how I made it through those years before meds lol [QUOTE=joemom]

How old is he?  Because all of my kids did that, ADHD or not until they were about 9 or so...

LOL I've always said its a good thing my son is so cute or who knows..... LOL  terrible, I know...  He IS though, even when he's being horrible, he's so cute.  LOL people tell me he has wonderful sparkly eyes, I'm like yeah, they are MISCHIEVIOUS!!!  I bet your son is a gorgeous, adorable child.  I tell everyone that the reason god made Noah so cute was so we'd let him live as long as he has!  As I always say, "better living through modern pharmaceuticals!"

Joemom- that's one of the reason's I never played sports.   I could never pay attention to what was going on, and then suddenly there was a ball flying at me, so I'd duck and cover rather than catch it.  Let's just say I was never picked 1st in gym class.

Also, no need to wait till he's 25- The choices seem to be laugh or pull your hair out, so I laugh.

that would have been a definate kodak moment lol i agree keep a journal or scrapbook for him if he doesnt appriciate it his wife will lol.

very funny,  my son now 10 has had those days.  Baseball was the same for him I would see him sociallzing in the outfield as the ball was coming right to him, as I sit there with all the parents of the children that are paying attention to the game.  In a way it can be embarrassing, but those are the funny moments we keep and save in our minds to share with them later in life, or with the wife lol!  We really have to laugh it off to keep our sanity!   Love your stories!

Oh, my, you have to keep a journal! That's too funny!
