Hey People,

- I'm a 20yr old college student with ADHD and Anxiety/Depression

-I currently take Adderall XR30 mg

-my doctor has prescribed me 10mg of Prozac a few days ago. However I'm not going to take it until Im finished with my final exams.

-SO since I have this time... I would like to hear opinons/advice/expierences with prozac.

     thanks!

bman3039205.6724652778I started taking 10mgs of Lexapro right before my finals last semester.  I couldn't take the anxiety any longer, but it's a relief, don't worry too much about it.I would start it, you aren't going to feel any effects for a while.

I've started it and have noticed a few side effects.. not terrible though.

I'm taking Prozac in place of xanax. The xanax wasn't working anymore and I know that it can cause physical dependence.

Question is, will the prozac eventually work like the xanax did for anxiety? EVEN IF the Adderall is the culprit for the anxiety?

BMan,

I take Prozac along with Wellbutrin.  I took Prozac many years ago when I had panic disorder in college.  It worked very well for my anxiety, but mostly because it stopped my "obsessions".  I still had to take Klonopin (a longer acting benzodiazepine than Xanax).  I am not OCD, but I worry endlessly and fixate on things (especially negative) which really aggravates my anxiety.  When I was dx'ed with ADHD a few weeks ago, my PDoc put me back on Prozac to help combat the obsessiveness and help "slow down" my mind.  I added Wellbutrin later for the ADHD.

It will take a while before you really notice anything, but it can have side effects.  Those range all over the place, from nausea to dizziness etc.  I had trouble the first time I took it with "depersonalization" - a very unpleasant sense of being disconnected from your self and the world.  It stopped after a week.  When I started it again recently I weaned on very slowly (started with 5mg/day and increased to 10mg then 20mg over the course of a couple of weeks) and had no trouble whatsoever.

You also should know that it will not relax you in the way Xanax does.  You are just more likely to notice you feel better and less anxious down the road.  Hopefully it does help you with that.  I just started Wellbutrin a couple of weeks ago and it does aggravate my anxiety.  My PDoc warned me that it could trigger panic attacks (since I am prone anyway) but those are so familiar to me that it is not bothersome. I increased my Wellbutrin dose yesterday and spent most of this morning wanting to crawl up the walls, but that should go away after a few days.

If Prozac does not help you counter the anxiety and Xanaz no longer works, ask your doctor about the possibility of taking a low (like 2mg) dose of perphenazine.  This is an anti-psychotic drug (related to thorazine) - my old Pdoc many years ago gave me this to try and it worked amazingly well.  It didn't sedate me, just calmed me.  2mg is a teensy-weensy dose - normally that drug is prescribed in much higher doses for psychotic patients.  I have no idea though whether it is OK to take with something like Adderall.  Anyway, it is an idea for you to think about if this doesn't work....

Best wishes!

Thanks for the reply, I have noticed that "depersonalization" feeling. It has been about a week now, and that has indeed subsided. I still have anxiety but its starting to be controlled.
