Give him a couple days to get used to the med, but watch him (I know you are doing this anyway). Try to figure out if he really seems depressed or if he is just quiet and working through the new feelings with them med. Also watch for the period when the meds are leaving the body (for posible rebound).
Everyone is so different in their response to these meds that it is hard to predict an outcome without giving it a little time. It could be that you have not found the right med, or there is a co-existing issue like anxiety or OCD that is complecating the treatment. Keep at it. You will find a good med (or combo) to meet your son's individual needs.
You will find help and support here through this journey.
vickie39206.6160069444It took me a couple of weeks to get used to my son being quieter and not bouncing all over the house when he switched from ritalin to focalin. The ritalin was working, but not very well, so we were still seeing a lot of impulsivity. After he switched it took me a while to be convinced that the focalin wasn't making him depressed, but that he was sitting in his room actually focusing on something for more than 5 minutes (like reading!).
But do watch him- if he's not engaging in activities that he enjoys then that's a concern
My son was started on Adderall XR and it made him very depressed. We switched him to the daytrana patch. So far it has been wonderful. Good luckMy son became psychotic and angry at everyone on adderall xr. The teacher told me he was getting in the other kids faces. She knew this was not the true child.
Doctor stopped med immediately. We switched to concerta, a god send!
We are about to try the patch. I am sure we will be posting questions!
