strattera ...what is your opinion | ADHD Information

I stuck with it for 12 weeks.. and it made my Anxiety, Irritability and mood swings much worse along with too many side effects, so my Dr finally took me off of it. I have ADHD w/Hyperactivity and he said that it generally doesn't do as well with those with hyperactivity. I have a friend who's husband is on it and doing well aside from really bad irritability and mood swings. She doesn't like that in him because he used to be so patient and calm and they have a 3 year old daughter that he needs to be patient with. Otherwise it helps him (He's ADHD inattentive type).  From what I've read, if you have mood issues, the dosage is too low. But if you started a few days ago, then I assume the doctor will ramp up shortly until you reach your target dose.

Obviously the Doctor would know best.  However, my son was on Strattera and I think it states it is also beneficial if you have some anxiety.  However, if you don't have anxiety with ADHD, maybe it does not have the best side effect.

This drug helped my son with some things, but not the hyper, so we took him off of it.

My husband takes Straterra and loves it.  The only side effects he had were feeling a caffeine "rush" for about an hour after taking it (only the first couple of days), mild stomach cramps for a few minutes after taking it (went away quickly) and some constipation.  That was fixed after taking a stool softener recommended by his doc.

He is calmer, less impulsive and able to focus on things better now.  It has only been about 2 1/2 weeks so it is nice to see a difference already.  He is currently taking 50mg and goes back for a follow-up this morning.  He'll probably get increased.

It seems like a fair amount of people have unpleasant side effects from Straterra and I know of a few people here that it did not work for, but if it DOES work, it is nice to have even 24-hour relief.  It is best to give a med some time to work - I had to wait a week before side effects from Wellbutrin subsided, although they were not that bad.  Sometimes it can take 2-3 weeks for it to go away, and of course, when you increase your dose it is likely that some will return for a time.

That said, if the med is making you depressed you did the right thing by calling your doc.

Good luck and I hope you feel better!

Let me know how you make out on it and what the doc says. My doc wants to try it... i just started to take strattera 4 days ago and i hate it..i am so tired and i feel a bit depressed..is this normal and how long will this last...

Call the doc, and ask what the doc wants you to do.

I have heard others having similar issues with straterra (and of course some love it). Everyone reacts differently to the different medications and it is trial and error until you find the treatment that works best for you.

ok yeah i call the doctor he has not called be back i will follow up tomorrow...i will let you guys know ..thanks

Hi:

Strattera didn't work for me.  I was on it for a month.  Had all the side effects listed except for stomach problems.  I was tired and sickly feeling.  Good luck.

It takes 6-8 weeks to actually see results, so stick with it. It is a wonderful med when prescribed properly.
