Teacher Frustration | ADHD Information

I always kept in contact with the school immediately if it looked like contact dropped off.  They eventually learned I would make it easier on them if they wanted and told them just to call home if the behavior warranted a follow up at home as well. Other ideas were for them to write a 1, 2, or 3 in his agenda with no explanation from them needed. 1 of coarse being an excellent day. The teacher knew that if she put a 3 he would be grounded for 2 nights from video games/ and computer. If the child got a 1 or a 2 I added on the praise hugs etc.

Yah it is frustrating.

yes this agenda 1,2,3 is similar to my feedback form. We go up to 5 (meaning worst) if she gets a 4 or 5 I get an explanation. This way if it wasnt her fault, like I messed with her meds  she wont get in trouble.Nancy, the school year is almost over( so sorry you got a bummer teacher).  I suggest that you talk to the principal and ask him or her to hand pick the teacher for your child for next year.  Explain what type of communication you will need to help your child be successful.

I am so fed up with my sons first grade teacher.  Since starting him on meds in January I have repeatedly asked for her to keep me informed as to how he is doing in class.  A call every few weeks is all I am looking for.  I have even spoken to the principal and expressed to him, that since my son in on meds I need to know whats happening in the classroom in case any changes need to be made.     Well the school year is over in 6 weeks and I have yet to hear my phone ring.  Lately his work completion/behavioral chart has not been looking as great as it has in the last few months.  The chart just comes home in the backpack with no explanation as to why he did not receive his stickers for that day.  Again I am forced to track down this teacher and when I do, she really offers very little insight.  I sense that she resents that I expect this of her and I also think she is a bit of a 1950s teacher in a 2007 world.  Does not really buy the whole ADD thing.  I am considering a complaint to the district, but my son wil be in the school for four more years, so I am reluctant.

Sorry to be long winded.  I am just really aggravated  by this.

Have any of you had similar problems with  teachers?

Some of the teachers do not want to provide reports or implement rewards . It's their classroom and their choice, if you have no 504 or IEP. I would focus on next year, come up with a game plan, and then go talk to the principal about which teacher would be the best choice for what you have in mind. Have you thought about selecting a summer program that will give you input or just going to the classroom every day for an hour or so to see for yourself?NoTellin39213.4002662037

Thanks Diane V.  My plan was to proceed as you suggested by drawing up my own weekly form and next year I will address the teacher right away.

Since I don't have an IEP (it doesn't seem needed at this point) my hands are kind of tied.  Must I get an IEP just so that I can get feedback?

Ridiculous..

no, you should not need an IEP for feedback. Our IEP is for modifications and additional services. The feedback is something you will probably struggle for no matter what. I even have to "remind" them to homor some of things in her IEP :O). An IEP is juts what it stand individual education plan. Having them let you know how your child is doing behaviorally is another deal. another option if they wont go as detailed as my number range is stickers. You could send a big pack of smiley/sad face stickers with a form and ask if they could just put a happy or sad face on each day/week whatever. I would hope in first grade they are helping him put his folder together for homework, that can be part of his homework folder and if you do all the work to set it up, they can just stick the sticker on. If you get a bunch of sad stickers you can start calling to find out what is going on.

This year I made up a check off list and asked my daughters school to just give her a 1-5 on different things, focus, attention, fatigue, silliness. They did do this for me, but I guess the really didn't HAVE to. I suggest meeting with your childs teacher early in the school year next year and bringing some ideas with you and sort of brainstorm how you can keep a handle on his day. Some years are good, some...............not so good. I feel for you, nothing is more frustrating that NOT knowing.

The only way we have been able to get the teachers (this and last year) to do anything, was to have it in the IEP and to remind them of thier legal obligations. Right now I can't even get a Connor's form from the teacher (it has been 3 months and she has promised numerous times to get it to me), and I never got one last year.It is all quite frustrating . I do constantly tell myslef that they do have OTHER children to worry about and not just mine, but things like three months to wait for paperwork and never getting a response back is ridiculous. A friend of ours has also waited several months (I think 4) for her Connors form back. I send weekly "reminders" when I am witing for a response. Probably drives them crazy, but I don't have 20 kids to worry about, just my 2.great idea joemom, we got much more once we involvoed the principal.
