I would suggest giving the guanfacine at least a week to 'kick in'. If you still find that your child is not sleeping then talk to your child's doctor.
But, yes, you can take both. Here ,we do. [with dr's ok]
You should check with the doc. But the action of melatinin and guanfacine are different and should not cause issues with each other.Vickie, I'll definitely check with the dr. When he was still awake 2+ hours after taking the guanfacine, I called a pharmacist. He said not to give both, but I'll still check with the dr. because pharmacists seem to be more conservative.
Hopefully this'll be a non-issue. DS actually fell asleep regular time -- 2-1/2 hours after he took the guanfacine (for him, it took the melatonin two hours to help him sleep, so maybe this is a pattern or maybe just coincidence). If it hadn't been for the thunderstorm, I'm guessing he would have fallen asleep even sooner.
Hopefully he won't be too tired in the morning. He's due at religious school at 9 AM. If he's having major issues with adjusting to it, it's not a big deal to skip Sunday School that day.
Chase also takes the melatonin with the guanfacine when needed. He has periodic problems with falling asleep, and when those arise, he knows to come and ask me for a melatonin. We spoke to his doctor, and she gave the OK to use it as needed.
