I'd also suggest a psychiatrist [if you can get one] for prescribing. Some know a LOT more pharmacology around "off label" uses and they often know more about using "side effects" in a postive way.

I know that sounds oxymoronic but some meds have side effects that can be beneficial.

Eg: Paxil is technically an anti-depressant but it does work on the odd ADHD case. Or in the case of some narcolepsy drugs that also have a "side effect" of increasing focus but are not considered ADHD drugs. Or with a child who is too hyper to eat, which ones may increase apetite.

It's still trial and error but their training in the use of psych meds is more in-depth.
our psychiatrist can give you the side effects, dosages and uses for any med I have brought up or he thought of without a blink. He knows his stuff. It's amazing how he keeps track. Although reading these boards, some of us are getting that kind of knowledge ourselves :o).Oh hang in! It is horrible. My daughter is 12 and VERY, VERY sensitive to meds. Always had side effects. We have just turned away from using stimulants.............again............She just cannot tolerate any of them. Keep trying, something will work. For some kids nothing is perfect and all of this is quite the battle of reducing symptoms and living with side effects. eric is right, this is unfortunately part of the journey...............something will help and not make her so unhappy or sick. Just try to hang in.I know it hurts right now but keep trying because life can get better than this for all of you.

It can take quite a bit to find the right combo especially if someone is 'med sensitive'.

It's going to take some patience and time.

We're all in this struggle together

I don't "do" meds very well either so it's always a trial to get medications that work on my system. Heck, even asthma puffers don't work on me!

So I know how frustrating and painful it can be to try to get medications that work properly. I don't deal with it well so I'm sure it's even harder to be the parent of a small child and watching them suffer.

In a few months or a year hopefully it will all look much better

I'm sorry it's been such a struggle to find the right meds.  Unfortunately, it's luck to stumble on the right one.

For awhile, it was a major fight to get my ds to take his meds in the morning.  DH came up with a system that's made a big difference.  We set the microwave timer for 3 minutes.  I hit start as soon as the meds are on the spoon.  If he takes it in less than 1 minute, he gets the mega-bonus.  If he takes it in less than 2 minutes, he gets the regular-sized bonus.  DS has been taking the medicine in less than 15 seconds since we started this system!  The bonus used to be a jelly bean, smartie, or something else that would give him an immediate reward that was a good motivator (mega bonus would mean getting two).  We have to keep changing rewards to keep it interesting for him.  DS also asked if we could create a treat bag of different things where he could choose one item.  Last week, DS asked if he could trade a treat for extra computer time later in the day (fine with me!).  Maybe your dc also would do better taking medicine if there was an immediate reward on which to focus?

I am very fortunate that my pediatrician has that same knowledge as well. When I was needing to make a switch of meds for Chase, she knew each one that I brought up and what side effects to expect...listed them off, then we decided that, for Chase, ritalin LA was the one to try next.

From what I read here on the boards, most peds are not that way, so I count my blessings. I have used this ped and loved her for almost 14 years, long before any ADHD was thought of, even before Chase was born, so I am sooo lucky that she can handle his med needs now.[QUOTE=Mom2ADHDboy]

i think this is a great idea and i will 4 sure try it thank u

thank you all truely it really helps to not feel alone

It might be a long road to finding something that works...the exact
medication or combination of medications. You're seeing things that are not
working, which is a part of the process so stay in there, and encourage your
daughter to do the same.
