Anxiety Issues | ADHD Information

My son is 7 years old and has always had some anxiety issues (he worries excessively about things) and his special ed teacher is becoming concerned that this is beginning to interfere with his work and his ability to focus.  Does anyone have any experience with childhood anxiety?  He has an IEP and the school will do a full psychiatric evaluation in September but I don't know if I should jump the gun and have one done privately as well.  Any advice? We also have anxiety issues. We do treat them with medication. Does your son take ADHD meds? These can sometimes increase anxiety. You could do a private evaluation also it is much more comprehensive, however very expensive and not always covered by insurance. He is not on any medication as the Docs that he has seen feel that he is a combination of some ADHD characteristics, sensory integration disorder, oppositional defiant disorder and anxiety issues.  Noone has been able to officially diagnose him and it's been irritating me.  I have him in special ed for most of his academics and in the mainstream for all the specials like gym, art, etc.  Sounds like a full neuropsych evaluation is the way to go. So you can pinpoint his needs and address them one at a time. If private neuropsych is just too expensive go for a psychiatrst eval and use school's eval for the rest in September.Stimulant meds can heighten anxiety.  Maybe try decreasing the stimulant, or trying a non-stimulant med?  Anxiety meds are another possibility.  I'd definitely be talking to the dr.
