Yeah we have had this discussion many times....all 4 of my pregnancies and births were quite easy and uneventful....longest labor was my 10 pounder (only 8 hours long) and all were good sized babies....well over 8 pounds every one...
The first baby and the last baby are ADHD, both clones of their dad who is also ADHD, one is a girl, one is a boy.
Total genetics.
I think genetics also. My son was a very easy pregnancy, no problems whatsoever. But, he is a miniature version of my husband who is adhd (diagnosed by me, but on antidepressants).
My daughter was an awful pregnancy, severe pre eclampsia, delivered early as well, but she is a mini version of myself, no adhd at all.
i truly think in our case my dd adhd is due to pregnancy/birth trauma. it does not run on either side of the family....she was premature, and i suffered from severe pre-elampsia during pregnancy and i went into heelp prior to delivering her. she was a 4 pound baby...that had to be delivered early. my OB warned us about it after delivery in the hospital...
shelley
I think it is genetics in our case also....my hubby is an undiagnosed ADHD ( only diagnosed by me) and my son seems to be his clone....he got his brain from his Dad ( super smart) and his good looks from me joemom39221.6321643519I had a normal pregnancy and delivery, no ADHD on either side. My daughter has LD/ADHD, plus a few other things, but I STILL believe it is genetics. She was how she was from the second she was born, she never paid much attention, LOTS of fatigue, due to a few things, slept a LOT (which is a great trait in an infant .) But my point is she was born who she is and that's the journey we get. I used to think of why does she have "all this stuff", something I did, didnt do......etc., etc., and now I still think how can I help her, what can I do, what should I NOT be doing. Really though she is who she is and I do believe she will be FINE in the end. It may wear us all down ebfore we get there, but we'll get there.
Absolutley genetics! I never knew I had it{but always knew I wasn't like everyone else} until my son was diagnosed. Then I find out that several of my cousins {girls} and my Uncle has ADHD/ADD
I agree 100% with MetisRebel it is exacerbated not only by diet {which I am very bad with} and by social stigmas that follow an ADHD person.
Do you think it is also related to other neuro issues, such as Manic Depression, Bipolar, Alzheimers, etc. We have a family history of the above, but no other ADHD issues that I know of. If there are, I have never been around them to notice. My mother's side of the family is the typical over dramatized Southern family, crazy aunt in the attic kind of thing.
Once my son was diagnosed, I thought it might have been because of the respitory distress he was in when he was born (lack of oxygen to the brain). His cord was wrapped around his neck, and he was put on an antibiotic for 3 days before he could come home from the hospital. Just a thought.
Symptoms can be due to genetics, trauma (head trauma or birth trauma), etc. Symptoms can be made worse with stress and anxiety. The brain does not function as efficiently under stress and can push someone who was compensating OK, into a totally scattered state. There are a percentage of people who show more symptoms with diet, and certain deficiencies corrolate with symptoms. Post tramatic stress syndrome, cancer treatment, developmental disorders, bi-polar, and other disorders such as MS, can show symptoms of ADHD. These, and more, are areas that the meds are being tried out in clinical studies to see if symptoms may be reduced or elimiatated in these populations.Absolutley genetics! pjstrinkets39218.409537037I was beating myself up thinking for a very long time that it was something I had done during my pregancy that may have casued my dd's ADHD... but several books, her ped, her psych and many many others have told me that is all genetics.
With that said... diet can effect the way a child can behave.. good, bad and the ugly. Stress is bad for everyone and cause many people to have different reactions. Some people thrive in stressful situations and other just melt.
Just my 2 cents worth.
Definetely genetic IMHO. It can be exacerbated by diet.I am not so sure about the genetic component. Nobody has ADHD on my side of the family. My exes mom's side doesn't have it. So it would have to come from his fathers side. He has never met his father. So this is possible.
Ds lost oxygen when he was born. He was stuck in the birth canal. I almost had an emergency C section. They used vacumn extraction instead.
I believe its hereditry also, my father has a mental illness but never seeked treatment, his grandfather had a bad temper so we were told, so obvious he had the mad genes also. My nephew is ADHD he acts very unusual at times, is also verbally abusive to his parents but butter wouldn,t melt in his mouth were his friends are concerned, he was born with vacumn extraction, difficult birth. His father puts it down to the mad family Genes. My son is ADHD he is only 6, recently started on meds, I want my son to have a functional life, not like my father, My son was also born with Vacumn extraction, difficult birth, than the stupid nures didn,t know how to release the pressure to take the cap off, so my son ended up with a big cone head, Dr said he would be fine. My Cousin had a difficult birth with her son, they used vacumn extraction also, son has auditory processing problems, my sisters first child, difficult birth, also Vacumn extraction ADD and visual and auditory problems.
