New med isnt working | ADHD Information

Well the new med is not working. It was suppose to work immedialty.

I just think the focalin isnt working. But the doctor says its doing something.

I few people say to go to another doctor. It is so hard now a days. My son has gov insurance. And well there arent that many doctors for him to see on his plan. Which makes me real mad. But what can I do. He goes back real soon I think its next week. I am going to recommend taking him off the focalin and tring a new one. Maybe the Aderall. I have heard things about that.

oh by the way the marbles work great. Now if I could just be more routine with them. But my life is so not routine. I actaully forgot to give him marbles last night. I feel so bad. He didnt remember I did today. But he las learned to eat dinner in a timley fashion, he doesnt take an hour to get himself dressed anymore. And he doesnt argue about it. So now we are doing it aat school. Today he is having ruff day at school.

My fear is that he is going to start kindergaten well here they only go for a couples hours then off to another after care. Which I will have to change because he will need to be transported. Then they will not be able to control him and kick him out then I will have to wuit my job. Because no one can handle my son. I wish there were other ways to improve him that I can do at home.

I have tried so many things. But its school that there is a problem. Not home. He just can sit down, poor kid bites his nails, and I dont know if the meds make his lip chapped or hes biting it.

I wish there was more I could do. I feel so helpless.

How much focalin is he taking?  We saw no results with my son on 10mg, but when we upped it to 20mg he was a different child.

He is on 20 mg of the focalin.

He was on Concerta to long time ago. Which that was the only med I have seen that worked. But then it stopped working. Like he metoblized to quickly. They upped it all the way up to 36 mg. And that didnt work. So the doc told me she couldnt do more. SHe was just he peditrican. That is when we started seeing the new Doctor.

If the marbles are working already then that's a good sign

I'd tell him sometimes mom doesn't remember and he has permission to remind you or put them somewhere like the middle of the kitchen table so you all remember

Don't jump the gun in worrying, yet. Some aftercare programs are exceptional with difficult children, some are not. You may have to advocate on his behalf sometimes and keep them informed about medication changes etc.

I used to volunteer at an afterschool program that my foster daughter attended. It was in a "poor" neighbourhood and some of the people there were just spectacular with LD kids and kids with mental health struggles.

I have tried so many things. But its school that there is a problem. Not home. He just can sit down, poor kid bites his nails, and I dont know if the meds make his lip chapped or hes biting it.

When you get the meds straightened out it will get easier. And you're already getting somewhere with the marbles. It might feel helpless but you've already got some good things started.

And tomorrow is another day

Don;t give up on the meds. It is amazing what a dose change can do. It takes a LOT of tweaking to get it right.

Most pediatricians will stay in the guidelines on the med package inserts because they lack the experience of med managment outside of this. It is good that the ped sent you to someone else.

What type of doc are you now seeing? Psychiatrist?

20mg focalin is roughly equivalent to the 36mg concerta (for reference). It may be that your son needs either a higher dose than most or a different med. Hang in there. I know how hard it is to find the right treatment.

You might also look at guanfacine to augment the stim for behavior issues. There is a long Tenex thread with lots of info:

I am glad the marbles are helping. They work great for us and have taught me to be more consistant.

You could talk to your doctor about Adderall.   It is in a different family of stimulants than concerta and focalin.  My son has tried all of the stimulants except the patch and Adderall is by far the best for him.  Some kids respond well to this medication and others have bad reactions and get moody and angry.
