Straterra and Concerta? | ADHD Information

Anyone tried both Straterra and Concerta for their child? I have a dd age 7 - VERY hyper. On 54 mg Concerta and Tenex 1.5 mg and although DEFINITE improvement on these meds, she is still fidgety and easily distracted. The dev. doc who did an eval said still very fidgeting and difficulty with concentrating so she might need more meds.

We have also noticed this is still an issue for her. When she has homework for a new topic introduced at school that day, it is like she has never seen the stuff before. The pyschiatrist who prescribed the meds originally is recommending we add Straterra to see if that helps. She is only 47 lbs, so we don't want to go up on stimulants anymore. I don't want to do Adderrall as that is not as long acting as the Concerta and it is all we can do to get all the stuff done in the evening that needs to be done before the Concerta wears off.

Has anyone tried this? I have the samples - I will try this weekend (18 mg) in case there is a bad reaction.

I have not, but if it doesnt work out, I wouldnt totally shy away from things that dont "last as long". Another option is to add a short acting drug for the afternoons. We did this for a while to help get through homeowrk eveing activities. Meaning if you went to Adderrall and it didnt last as long, you could add a short acting stimulant at lunch or after school for those things. Adderall XR lasts for 12 hours...how long is the concerta lasting?

Just so you know, strattera has a lot of the same side effects....appetite loss included...and I have heard that the starting dose is 10mg....PM edbson to get more info on strattera, it is quite weight dependent and touchy, and must be ramped up veeerrry slowly to avoid the worst of the side effects I believe.

I have heard of strattera and stimulants combined for longer coverage.chasesmom7939219.3251388889

My son (12yrs old) is on Concerta 54mg in the morning and 50mg Strattera at night plus 0.2mg Clonidine.  This is the best we've been in a long time.  He finally in the past 6 months or so started gaining weight.  He's grown about 4 inches and gain about 20 pounds, which he needed!!  I wasn't too keen at first but it really seems to help.  I give him a Concerta break on the weekends if we are just going to be at home and he can go run around outside.  He's been on this combination for about a year now i think.  It was hell at first trying all these different combinations but i'm hoping we've finally found the combination that works best.

I heard Adderrall XR is supposed to be 12 hrs - but usually doesn't last that long for most children and they do need extra in the afternoon. Concerta is also supposed to be 12 hrs. For my dd and most people I talk with, it lasts about 11. It does get us through homework, but she so much wants to play after supper, like all of her friends do. I hope the Strattera does help into the evening hrs for this purpose.

I have given short-acting Ritalin to let her go back out to play after supper - but the timing can be an issue - need I have to bring her in at 5:30 p so she can take it and still get to sleep at 8ish, then drag her in again at 6 to eat... tried moving supper up to accomodate but that didn't seem to jive with the other children's supper and play schedule. If I give at 6 p supper, she doesn't sleep until 9 and then is cranky the nexy day. If I don't give, she is fine while playing but then comes in and unloads on me or her sister. I am sure you are all familiar with the drill.

Thanks for the posts!

Ritlain LA is a 10 hour med. That may work for you then add the short acting Ritalin earlier. That is true, the ritalin LA does last about 10 hours for chase. I just make sure he does his homework before 6 PM, and he doesn't need the stim for anything really except focus, so I usually don't need to give him a short acting ritalin...

From what Kare1972 posted though, the combo may be a good fit...it is at least worth a try.
