How to get help? | ADHD Information
Hi,
After doing some online reading and a few tests as well, I'm fairly certain at this point I have ADHD. I can relate to so many of the stories I've found...I'm supposedly very smart but school has always been an inconsistent struggle. I would get into trouble for daydreamning, talking too much, basically being a distraction to those around me, and a slob! My focus is all over the place, I fidget like I'm still in elementary school (I'm female, 25) I lose things constantly, and a wide variety of other things. My grades in college were very inconsistent....I can do well but it was a huge struggle. I have a hard time sitting through movies, things like that.
Long story short.....I have no idea who to turn to for help! I'm sort of new in town, so I don't have a regular doc. Is this something I can just call for an evaluation on, or do I need referrals?? Any advice would be most appreciated!
Depending on your insurance, you may be able to find a psychiatrist that treats adult ADHD. It can take a while to get into see one.Hi there, and welcome :-) I have just recently found this board, and it’s
been incredibly helpful to read about the experience of others.
I’m essentially in the same spot as you, except that I am 27 and I was
diagnosed with ADHD when I was in junior high. I’ve never been treated
with medication, however.
I have my first appointment with a psychiatrist tomorrow. I was not
referred by my GP. I used my insurance to search for a doctor who
specialized in ADHD. When I called I told the receptionist that I would like
to come in and meet with the doctor about treatment for ADHD.
Truth be told, I don’t really know what to expect. I’m certain that she will
evaluate me in any number of ways, and she may even disagree with my
first diagnosis.
In your case, I would use insurance as a first resort. If you do not have
insurance, you should still be able to search for a doctor and pay out of
pocket. There are many resources for this (I believe CHAAD is one), or
you can just do a Google search.
Good luck!
thanks! I actually just made an appointment w/ a psych and go in on June 7th. I'm really nervous....I guess I'm just scared they won't think anything needs addressing and it's "all in my head" you know?
Make sure you write down all that you would like to discuss and why you think you have ADHD. It is really easy to forget things when in with a doc, especially when you are nervous.
