New at this.... | ADHD Information

Hello all.  Well we went today and the PED thinks he definitely is ADHD.  She is referring us to a Psychatrist.  Hopefully we will get in soon as I recently lost my job and will not have insurance after June.  Anyone know options when you have no insurance? What kind of doctor are you seeing? If you see a psychiatrist, then the forms and quick chat could be it. You might leave with a prescription. If you are seeing a psychologist or neuropsychologist there may be testing involved, and numerous appointments. The Conners tests are helpful in the sense they can get a "general feel" for your childs behaviors across more than one environment (i.e. school, home). This will not be the only tool used to diagnose. Try to take it one step at a time. Seeing a child psychiatrist is the ideal choice, but quite often we all need to start with a pediatrician. Many people are managed quite well by their pediatrician. Let us know how you make out at the doctor.

He would need to see a board certified child psych. The Connors is not really accurate, and does not diagnose anything. ADHD canot be diagnosed by filling out forms.

Psychosomatic disorder, now more commonly referred to as psychophysiologic illness, is an illness whose symptoms are caused by mental processes of the sufferer rather than immediate physiological causes. If a medical examination can find no physical or organic cause, or if an illness appears to result from emotional conditions such as anger, anxiety, depression and guilt, then it might be classified psychosomatic

Just recently myself and my son's teacher completed the Conner's form.  I really don't understand the report to well.  It looks like on average my son is above 70 (very much above average) according to their Summary of the Conner's.  What's next?  We have a dr apt tomorrow to evaulate him.  I just don't know where we go from here.  Also, what is Psychosomatic?  This was one of the category's that fell into my results but not the results of his teacher?

Very Confused,

Crystal

and in our experiance drs have been really good about sample packs on meds

Our psychiatrist actually doesnt take insurance, but because pediatric psychopharmocolgists are hard, and we needed the expertise for med management,  to find we go to him and pay cash. The good thing is he charged us initial consult, then mostly we talk on the phone (which he does not charge for ) then we only have to see him in office once or twice a year so it is totally manageable.

As far as meds go, they are expensive at times, there are patient assistance programs that will provide med for a small copay or for free if you qualify income wise.
