Dr. recommended meds for sleep | ADHD Information

My ds was waking up during the night, 2 or 3 times a night. His dr
recommended that we try 3mg of Melatonin. It has really helped!! He
now sleeps thru the night. I got the Melatonin at Target and it was really
inexpensive. I am not sure about Benedryl everyday...

DD age 6 is having issues with rebound periods with her meds.

Our doctor recommended giving Benedryl to help her sleep when she is having a hard time calming down.

I am not sure how I feel about this.  ANy input?

My dd has not been dxd for sure with ADHD yet, but working on that, so she is not on any other meds, but generally Benadryl is a very safe medication.  I have given it many times to dd to help her sleep when she is having trouble.  They have the "quick melts" and liquid for little ones.  I have taken it myself as well to help with sleep on occasion.  It is often recommended for sleep and is non-addicting.  It is safe enough that I have given it to my 2.5 y/o for allergy symptoms and to help sleep if she is feeling bad.  HTH.

i would look into melatonin, 1 mg...i get it in a cherry flavor that dissolves for my dd.  i got it at gnc and i know that many others on this board use it as well to help their add/adhd child get to sleep.  my dd used to come out of her bed at least once and since we started melatonin she no longer does, she's ready to snuggle in bed.  she is also doing much better on ritalin la....adderal didn't work for her, she couldn't fall asleep while on adderal, and she was having other side effects as well so we made the med change.

melatonin i believe was 3 or 4 dollars for a bottle...it's done wonders here:)

My son was on concerta and had the terrible rebound also - we switched to Daytrana in Nov. His mood is much better but sleeping is still an issue. His pediatrician prescribed Clonidine. We started at .1 mg and moved to .2 mg around Feb. It seems to depend on his total mood on how well it works, but I don't think it works as well as it did. This is something I'll be talking to the dev. ped. this Friday.

There are many different meds and ideas on helping your child get better sleep - and I can tell you with experience - it is VERY important children get the proper sleep especially with ADHD because it affects them greatly. I hope you will find some ideas on here to help you!

Benadryl is totally safe. You can even take it pregnant. That is the ingredient in all the over the counter sleep aids. Is this an every night situation? If it is occasionally I think using Bendaryl is fine.I agree, Benadryl is totally safe, BUT
1. With some kids, Benadryl makes them more hyper...
2. You have a "hangover" in the morning after taking it

Try the melatonin, you won't be sorry. And it's way cheaper than Benadryl, I'm pretty sure. Our doctor is totally on board with the melatonin.

My daughter falls apart when she hasn't gotten enough sleep.  To the point I have kept her home from school a few times.

We are currently on 20mg of Focilin.  10 in the am 10 @ 3.  I am going to give it a few days then talk to her ped again.  She isn't herself.   Very irritable etc.

I would call also, sounds like there are more side effects going on, not just sleep.
