To be clumsy ? | ADHD Information
It is common for people with ADHD to be clumsy...well its not uncommon!
The big question is why??
I catch myself being clumsy at times where I'm daydreaming, being in another "world". As you know it can happen anytime, as long we do not hyper focus on something.
My theory goes like this:
When we are daydreamming, we fall so deep into our selves, into our thoughts. Our brain is working on something brilliant again, trying to find an idea it can work on or just something good to think at.
In this deep stadium we are less able to aware of the time going, sounds or when anyone tries to get in contact with us. We are, in other words, 90% deep down in our own thoughts and 10% present for our surroundings. This deep thinking stadium requires to much attention and energy that we can't or have difficulties with the control of our movements. Like walking into the door frame or just fall over a pile of papers lying on the floor and make it even a bigger mess.
I also automaticly slow down my walk when I daydream. The brain have not enough resourceses to daydream and keep up the walk in same time, because the daydreaming requires so much energy and resourceses.
I experience that i'm only clumsy when I daydream.I'm able to go back and see and feel a situation of mine. Thats what I do to understand and learn about ADHD and myself. The last two years I have thought about this.
ADHD was known as DAMP in scandinavia until 5 years ago. The M stands for Motor control. (DAMP=Defecits in Attention, Motor control and Perception). So the that swedish psychiatrist who in the middle of the 70'ties came to that designation ment that people with DAMP was clumsy.
Only a ½ year ago I asked my psychiatrist about my theory. He looked at me at said: What you say to me is that you intent to rewrite some history?? I answered yes!!
So the question of the bottomline is: are any of you aware of this or is it new for you?? Is it an old infomations for you??
please let me know :)
Best wishes

Thank you for your answer :)
Yes but the clumsyness is not a trait in it self, but comes from something else than bad motor control.
I know that there are two kinds of "clymsyness"...or to ways to be clumsy for us:
1. To be very focused on an object and reach out for it without see what is around it.(tunnelfocusing) So I knock the object down on the floor. I can easely be in an impulsive act.
2. When daydreaming. We're not aware because of the amount of resourceses used on thinking deep thoughts...
You agree? :)

Clumsy behavior is often an ADHD trait. I know my youth was spent often in waiting rooms of doctors and in the ER to get a new set of stitches, penicillin and tetanus shots to deal with cuts from trips, falls and bashing my head into low obstacles. My doctors knew me very well LOL.
Often I was either impatient or distracted. Simply not looking where I was going. Much of my clumsiness could be just being a kid but often I still end up clumsy without my meds. I just don't get as many stitches.
