We stop the meds for weight checks and also illness. I plan on taking my ds off for the summer and supplement with omega 3's. Good luck.
It is totally fine to just stop. I have done this on more than one occasion with stimulant meds. In our case not to see how symptoms were, but to see if side effects subsisded. That is one of the great things about the stimulant meds is it is in and out of your system in a matter of hours. Good Luck!We stop meds for the summer, DD uses Daytrana. We DO sometimes use it for ball gmaes etc, but not daily. My daughter is 9 yrs old and has been on metadate er for about four yrs...its gotten to the point where I just dont feel like she needs it anymore. I could be wrong but Im willing to give her a chance without it. My concern is, can I just stop giving it to her? Does that cause any type of withdrawl or adverse reactions? I called her Dr. and was told "uh, yeah, you just stop giving it to her". still not sure if thats the answer I was looking for. Help! The stims (including Metadate) can be stopped at any time without working down the dose. In the 4 years she has been on this med, has she ever missed a dose for a day? If so, that would give you an idea if there were any issues when stopping. My daughters' doc likes to take a break almost every year to see if the meds are still needed (see if maturity has lessened the need for meds) and get an unmedicated baseline for comparison.
Starting back up is a different story, depending on how high the dose is and if there were side effects during the initial dose tritration process.
yes, actually. she has gone for up to 4 or 5 days w/o before( 20 mg once a day). she needed it mostly for concentration purposes. she is somewhat hyperactive but more of an ansty daydreamer...she had to repeat the 2nd grade. this yr she did outstanding! I contribute that to the metadate(in part)and think i will probably try no meds for the summer and see how it goes. thank you for the help!
