I just turned 17 and was diagnosed with ADHD 6 years ago. High school has been very stressful, mostly homework. I have a 504 plan and get double time on tests and extended time on assignments. I got mostly c's my freshman year and a's and b's my 10th grade year. This year(my junior year) I got almost all a's. I have been working really hard because of college admissions but each night I have 5 to 7 hours of homework, not to mention that half of it I don't know how to do because I was not paying attention in class. I stay after school in the library most days and have a studyhall. My hardest class this year is the class that I'm the best at, math. The problem is that my teacher just goes over examples and we don't take notes. Since, I did not pay attention I did not know how to do the homework and she assigns a lot of it. When I was in algebra 1, 2 years ago I could just teach myself it from the book, but now it's much more complicated. Fortunately, my teacher is very accesible and lenient with homework deadlines. She spends a good portion of the class going over homework and during studyhall my school has a walk in math tutor. I was still spending hours on math but I got a high A in there all year. I am pretty much alone in high school as opposed to elementary school and middle school when I got a lot more extra help. I know that my city's childrens hospital has a good ADHD clinic. It offers a comprehensive treatment program that I think would be helpful. I'm going to college in about a year and a half and would like to get better treatment before I go to college so I can be successful in college. I'm just worried to ask my parents because they might say it is an unneccisary expense. It would be embarrasing if I asked them and they turned the whole idea down. If you have any advice I would really appreciate it. Evaluation is always good (knowledge=power). Print out the diagnostic criteria and ask your parents if your insurance covers the diagnostic process for ADHD. Then decide with them the route you want to take for diagnosis and posible treatment. The first step is usually filling out Conners or similar forms, history information and symptoms, then moving on the other testing, based on what needs to be ruled out. You can learn alot at the link below: http://www.help4adhd.org/en/about http://www.schwablearning.org/ I would just treatment other than just medice. For the past 6 years I'veswitched medice more times than I can count. I don't like taking it but I know I have to to get good grades. For the past 2 years I've taken Focalin XR 20 mg. Every medice I switch to has side effects. If you are already getting some treatment, an ADHD clinic may offer the expertice to better tune the meds to your needs and offer you other things like coaching and social, life, and organizational skills. |
