Dreading summer break? | ADHD Information

Thanks everyone. Yeah these are basic camps like "little trees." I guess that is fairly cheap, it works out to about .50 per hr if you do the math but we just dont have that kind of money! *Sniff.* I am going to try to plan something every day, it just gets rough with two on completely different schedules sometimes. Thanks for all the ideas.

Oh and she is 7 1/2.

Is she in girl scouts?  They offer 1 week overnight camps (if you think she could handle it) for "only" 0-0.  My kids are going to the YMCA this summer (they usually went to another daycare) and it's 0 a week for each of them.  Do you have a theme park around you?  We have King's Dominion 20 minutes from here and although it's 0 for the whole family (including parking), it's open from March through November...by going only twice, you've paid for the passes!  I pack our own drinks and snacks and they are really geared to kids.  Can you buy a small pool for the backyard and have her swim?  What about investing in one of those swing sets or a jungle gym?

This is Will's first summer on meds and being home.  I must say, so far, and this is only the second week, things are going far better than expected.  Last week was great.. I decided to have a little summer school lesson for Will and his little brother and they both love it! They ask for more work everyday!

The best advice I can give is to stay structured..

Today, we just sort of let go and hang out, and I've paid for it all day long.  He's been horrible..

Here's to a better day tomorrow!

A day camp that runs from 8-4 daily, and includes swimming a couple of times a week. NoTellin39239.3741087963My oldest does a 4H camp. She sleeps over and they do everything. Hiking, swimming, boating, fishing, crafts, scavenger hunts, campfires.....etc., etc. My 5 year old is going to the "Y" as shes not old enough yet for pony (horseback riding camp) or gymnastics camp. the "Y".Sorry if this is a double post, I'm having issues posting today.

I feel so guilty but I am dreading the summer this year. It is hard to keep Ashley involved in extracurricular activities as she just doesnt stay interested. I have looked into summer programs around here but they want close to 0 for only 2 weeks! I was shocked to see how much it was. I am worried about spending the money then a few days into it she will say she's bored and doesnt want to go. Last summer was dreadful, of course she wasnt on meds last summer so I am praying this year will be different. Its hard to get out sometimes and let her run her energy off at the park or what not in the summer because she has a little brother who isnt quite 2 yet and when it gets too hot I worry about him getting overheated. We get so cooped up some days, and I know that is part of the reason why she gets so wild. I am so stressed, and feel worried/sick just thinking of it. It makes me feel like a horrible parent. Is anyone else slightly dreading the summer break with their ADHD child?

Tina

How old is she?

0 for two weeks is very reasonable.  Where I live it can cost twice as much for a week.  I"m spending over ,000 to send my son to overnight camp for two weeks.  Yes, it's expensive and yes, we aren't rich so we are making adjustments but it's worth it to us.

Do you have any YMCA's near your or public pools?  That could be a day trip.

Does she have any friends you can make play dates with?

I do a camp mom thing and plan one outing a day.  Mcdonalds play place.  A trip to the wading pool. The sprinklers in the yard.  My greatist thing is throwing ice.  (Make a big bowl of ice and throw it one piece at a time into the street or at the back wall.  It shatters and sparkles. My boys will throw ice for an hour.)  Childrens museums etc.  Go to the mall for a cookie or ice cream.  Just follow her as she wanders around.  Put quarters in the ride on things if they have them.  A trip to the dollar store. She can pick one or two things.  If they have an outing to look forward to it will go smoother.
Do not go anywhere where she cannot be in motion.
Yea, been there. Check with your city's park and recreation dept for cheaper programs. (I am paying 5/week, which is the going rate here.) Check online for free stuff. For example, once a month is free family day at our local kid's museum. Maybe a wildlife facility has a free day. Does a friend have a pool in a condo or apt complex with a wading pool? Rent videos or children's computer games from the library. My local library has free story time once a week. Buy a bubble machine. Take them to the pet store--- My kids love this, and could stay for an hour.

All these ideas are good ones. Our local YMCA offers half day camps which I found nice for my kids when they were younger, this may help with the "boredom" part. Also if you can find a couple, let her pick what she would like to do.

I am also paying close to ,000.00 for two weeks overnight for my oldest. She gets so bored. We also are not rich, but she NEEDS it. My younger daughter is going to a school program and the "Y", as those are more affordable.

I think you'll see a big difference with her being on meds.

Just thought of another thing.  My local library has free passes to local museums.

Also, in the summer, the library has kid programs, although a library may not be the best place if your child can't sit still.  Still, the library is a great resource for what is going on in the community.

What kind of camps are you sending your kids to?
