Someone at some point has mentioned spraying flonase or nasonex (antihistamine nasal spray) on the area as a kind of barrier, then letting it dry before applying the patch.
I have no experience with the patch, but I do remember someone saying that it worked for them.
There is a huge long thread about daytrana.....I do remember some people mentioning a certain lotion as well.
I've found a new thing that helps some of the redness is Vaseline Soothing Moisture Cocoa Butter. Also bathing in Aveno body wash helps, I wash the area every morning and night with that and wait for it to dry in the morning. There is also a perscription called Flucinonide which my doctor perscribed when my son was a baby for eczema on his cheeks. It really helps with the patch area I think it's basically hudrocortisone cream but in a lower percentage. I also found out that my son got worse from the baby oil so I now take the adhesive off with olive oil. Sounds weird but I got the idea from my sister who uses olive oil for vaginal dryness of all things. Funny yes but she says it works. My son's doctor did say some kids can be allergic to baby oil. I think it gets worse if they scratch it of course and they do. I tell my son now if he feels itchy scratch the side it's not on if he needs to scratch at all. He actually does that and he says it helps. That way he's not scratching the side that's so bad. My son has not had any crackng though as yet. You might want to check that out. I do find that you really have to get all the adhesive off every day. Any night that we have forgotten or he has been too fussy to let me take it off he has gotten more rash. I tried the nasonex one time and it was taking too long to dry. I was blowing on it and he was complaining about the whole thing. Some nights I just put some Aveno moisturizing lotion on it. I've been told by the doctor that the hydrocoritizon cream can thin the skin if used too often. I have no experience with the patch, but joejoesmom is right that hydrocortisone cream is only meant to be used for few days at a time, might want to be careful those of you that are using this.My son gets little obsessions like that too, they seem to go away after awhile though. I'm sorry to hear about what your son is saying. I'm sure he's just pushing buttons. If he has been with you since birth, you ARE his "birthmom". I'm sure being adopted is hard to grasp as a child but you are all he knows right? My son does the "I'm going to live with my dad" thing. UGH it is soo irritating.
Yeah it says it will stay on in water... NOPE!! It comes off every time, not just after swimming either, even if he just gets wet like in a sprinkler or something. It is so irritating. It should stay on in water, and the meds should also take 3 hours after removal to stop being effective.
Flonase works, nasonex works, I even used nasalcrom(OTC). The Daytrana patch is supposed to be irritating, that is how the meds get through the skin, at least that's what they told us during the med trials.
I'm so glad to hear that the olive oil helped you too. I guess there is truth about natural remedies. Now if only we could find a natural remedy for ADHD that works. As for swimming we have only gone swimming once and as I mentioned before it came off and was stuck to the inside of his bathing suit. I'm worried about summer camp for that reason. I think they swim later in the day though. My son seems to have the patch wear off much faster than 3 hours. It takes 3 hours to kick in for sure but more like 1 for it to wear off. We all should really phone the manufacturer about the swimming problem. I phoned about bad patches I bought and they send me another credit card for 40 free ones. Maybe they would help you out with the swimming problem it's worth a try. What about one of those big knee bandages instead of duct tape. I think that would be less irritating. I think it's odd they said it's supposed to be irritating. I think really it's not the medication that is the problem but the adhesive. I find we really need to make sure we get it all off at night. My son has a new problem lately he is obsessed with catching flies or bees. He will stand for ages on the clover stamping on bees and although I tell him how mean it is to kill bees and how he will get stung he can't seem to stop himself. And then he will see little flies land on the window and be standing there for at least a half hour trying to slap them with his hand. It really bothers me I'm wondering is this a type of tic or obession that is developing? Has anyone elese noticed weird things like this. I know tics are more like facial blinks or sniffing and such but what the heck is this. I'm trying to ignore it and I have not asked the doctor about it yet. On top of all this my son is so upset about being adopted lately. We have told him since birth but he's 7 now and it really has clicked in. His favorite thing is to tell us that he's going back to his birthmom any time things don't go his way. It's hard to take we feel bad for him but we also know he's pulling our chain alot too.I had talked to my doctor about long term hydrocortisone cream usage, in this case it was for my daughter, he said it was totally safe and he himself uses it everyday. I will ask specifically for this situation though, I would hate to make things worse in the long run. I'll stick to just using it when it is really itchy. I tried the olive oil rather than the baby oil, and noticed an immediate difference. I have also started using cortisone cream and aveeno lotion at night. He still has some redness but not as bad and it seems to mostly go away after a day or two rather than 4 days or more.
Any ideas on how to keep the dang thing on when he is in water? I resorted to duct tape the other day, we were at a friend's house and he really wanted to swim but I could not fathom the idea of his patch coming off early and being at someone else's house!! Poor baby though had the red stripe from the tape, on top of his already irritated skin. Not something to do everyday that is for sure!!
Thanks I thought about using hydrocortisone at night, but I know it can be drying and his skin is already dry... I'll try it anyway though!
