Wellbutrin and Clonindine in Kids? | ADHD Information

Share

Hi -- new here.  I didn't see any current posts on Wellbutrin in kids... I just picked up the rx for my  8 yo ds and am starting to get nervous about starting him tonight.  He's currently on Adderall xr (he's aggressive and volatile and tempertantrumish) and we've already tried Adderall (before) Focalin, Concerta and Stratera.  Any experiences with Wellbutrin in kids... any cautions on side affects.

Thanks.

Thank you for responding... you were the only one .  He'll be taking the Wellbutrin with Clonindine.  He's very sensitive to meds, too, so I'll a little worried.  What did you put your dd on after Wellbutrin?

There are probably not a lot of children on Wellbutrin thats why. So many children do ok on stimulants, or stimulants with something added for the side effects. We are now taking Desipramine only. Desipramine is a tricyclic antidepressant. The drug of choice for ADHD treatment prior to stimulants. Been around a long time. We struggled greatly with side effects of stimulants for 2 years used all the meds to counteract side effects and all that. Finally whe dd was in the fourth grade and 10 years old and down to 47 pounds and developed tics her doctor and I agreed we had to stop the stimulants. We started Nortryptiline, also a TCA. It made her sleepy, but we cut her dose back and just managed. Her other symptoms seemed to be ok and the negative side effects we saw from the stilulants went away. We did for this over a year. This year she started middle school and was falling asleep in class. We added the Wellbutrin. I thought she was GREAT! Happy, on task, trying. She was still falling asleep (social studies is not the subject to have after lunch for  struggling student ). So we upped the Wellbutrin since she was good on it. That made her dizzy, so I called the doctor and asked about giving the stimulants another shot. She had gained 20 pounds and was almost 2 years older. So we did.............bad move. Tics started immediately, anxiety increased, by Christmas hated shcool and wanted me to homeschool (this from a child who hates me to have any part of even  her homework). I had to drag her out of bed in the mornings. So we added Zoloft came out of her "funk", but anxiety and tics worsening, significant rebound, so we changed to Concerta....nightmarre for us, she developed trichotillomaia (pulling out her eyelashes and eybrows ). Soooooooooooooo, added Tenex, helped the trich and tics somewhat, but I couldnt watch her like this so I stopped the Ritilan and said lets change. So here we are almost three months no stims and using Desipramine. We roughed it out a few months using Guanfacine (TENEX) while we built her dose and now here we are. She is happy, no tics, gaining weight. ADHD symptoms are better anxiety better. She's fine for summer, I am going to try adding some supplements over the next 6 weeks if not happy we'll up her Desipramine a tad before school starts. TCA's require EKG and blood work and have to build in your system. Only used 2nd line for ADHD these days for this reason, but it is what works for us. I LOVE the one medication. Keep me posted. I was happy with the low dose Wellbutrin. When we went back to the stimulants I said write this down becasue if this doesnt work I want to go back to this mix.

Yup we used Wellbutrin. For us it was GREAT at a low dose. Made my daughter happy and alert. She was taking it with Nortryptiline, and when we did try to increase her dose she got dizzy so we ended up having to drop back. The dizziness was due to the two meds together. She is super sensitive to meds and we really didnt have any side effects until we tried to up the dose. Will he take the Wellbutrin and Adderall or the Wellbutrin alone?
