Tonsils removed and adhd symptoms | ADHD Information

My son will be getting his tonsils and adenoids out because of breathing and snoring..ect and I was wondering if anyone else on here has had their childs tonsils and adenoids removed and they noticed a difference in their childs adhd symptonms. The ENT Dr. had mentioned that a lot of times lack of sleep from having bad tonsils and adenoids can cause ADHD symptoms. I know I also read some articles on the latter. I hate to say that my son will probably still have adhd symptoms if this surgeory is done or not but I was just curious if anyone else has gone through a tonsilectomy and noticed differences or no differences...Thank you

My son also had tonsils and adnoids out last fall- there was no change in his symptoms.  I had heard about this a while ago, but I wasn't expecting a change because he was getting the surgery for recurrent strep infections- nothing to do with sleep.

My ped. did ask about it at our next visit, though.

My daughter had her tonsils and adenoids removed right at the start of kindergarten.  I have not noticed a change in her adhd symptoms.  Still the same.

My child had his tonsils out a year ago and it helped with his sleep apnea nad snoring, however it had NO effect on the ADHD symptoms.  I have heard that this does help in some situations but it did not in our case.  I hope it does help your child!

My wild ADHD son had his tonsil and adenoids out to help with sleep issues.  No real change however quality of sleep was better.

I remember him coming out of anethetics and he was was coughing hysterically.

This older nurse came in and went mad at him and me being the over protective mum said that he suffered anxiety issues and panick attacks.  To which she just replied - "He just can't do that at all - You must stop him!"  She was so scary.  We called her Nurse Nasty - so every time he would cough I would threaten to leave and then Nurse Nasty would have to return - worked a treat!!!

I'd love a Nurse Nasty at home

He also ate a sub when we left hospital - no real "down time"

Hi.. My son had his adenoids out and tubes in his ears when he was 2 (he is almost 5 now) and if anything it put a little more "pep in his step" if that is at all possible :) The doctors told us he would be down for 2 days in pain, and we got home from the hospital and he was running all over the place. He ate a sub for dinner that night !! Nothing puts that child down then or now..

Good luck with the surgery, but just dont get your hopes up. I pray it does help though..

DD had hers out in Kindergarten, no change in symptoms, no change in sleep patterns. She has also had adenoids out and 9 sets of tubes, nothing has changed.

My daughter had her tonsils and adenoids removed in kindergarten.  Although the quality of her sleep improved, her ADHD symptoms remained the same.

my son has had 5 sets of ear tubes, tonsils and adenoids out and he is NOT out adhd child:) :) :)

i was under the impression   that it was the on set of strep throat that caused adhd symptoms to worsen and that   removal of tonsils thus eliminated further tics/syptoms from becoming noticably increased, but no change in what is already occuring ommas39265.8377199074

BL Moretti,

For air plane issues, get "Earplanes". They go into the ear before take off and do not come out until after landing. They allow the pressure in the ears to slowly equilibrate. My doc suggested them when I had to fly with an ear infection and perforated eardrum. They worked great.

thank god for sanity in the school system .  if i could thank mrs brown for teaching me to write i would .   would someone get a reporter over there and do an interview! My son not ADHD but really really smart and I have to say there were some teachers who looked at me as if they thoughthe should be medicated.
He is now 14 but had his first ear infection age 2 weeks.  His first tubes right ater his first birthday.  Slept through the night his first time that week.  His second set at 2 1/2. He had 11 major ear infections when he was five.  At age 6 they wanted to do another surgery with tubes.  I over heard a mom at the gym talking about how her daughter was helped with ear infections by a chiropractor.  I took my son to one and his ear infections got better.
I got so I could see it coming in his face and I would take him in.  He had only 2 the next year.  Now at 14 he can tell me and we go to the chiropractor.    His ears still kill him on airline flights all the years of problems have taken their toll.  Another odd thing is that he plays baseball and after he sees the Chiropractor he starts hitting like crazy!
Another thing that was of interest to me.  This same son went to a Gifted academy and the teacher there who had been teaching gifted kids for years said that often her kids are treated as if they have ADHD,  And... a huge percentage of them have lots and lots of ear infections!!  She said they are usually small people with big heads!!  She delt with all the hyperness really well and channeled it into positive ways.  There were counterws against the wall where the kids could go stand to do their work and she would pass out gum to fidgeters.  Some kid could get a T stool if they felt antzy.  She started each day with yoga stretching!!
WOW!!! Great teacher!Hi
my son had his tonsills and adenoids out when he was 3, nearly a year ago, due to sleep apnea, and its affect on his astmah, it has helped with his astmah, and he sleeps much better, he now no longer needs to sleep in the day very often, and his chest infections amazingly have vastly decreased, his temper improved initially as he was no longer over tired all the time, and the lack of infections and astmah attacks have enabled him to go to nursery on a more regular basis, but, as he has got used to having the sleep, over time he has become more difficult if anything, as he now has so much more energy, his older brother is ADD and ODD so he is now picking up some very bad habits, put it this way, he gets the perfect example of the perfect tantrum several times a day....that said I would not be surprized if he is also dix as ADD/ADHD at some point. Earplanes... I was looking for them once and then I forgot all about it.  I will try again for the next vacation.
