Seasonal allergies and ADHD | ADHD Information

I have 2 kids with allergies, and only 1 with ADHD. I don't think there is a connection.Dh and I both have allergies, severely in dh's case and neither of us have ADHD.I keep seeing a lot of children who have seaonal allergies and ADHD.  Does any one else see any kind of correlation between the two?????I have one child with allergies and one without. Both have ADHD, and the one without allergies has it the worst (combined form, previously with ODD, depression and anxiety).

Hi...my 10 year old was diagnosed initially with ADD.  After trying med...and non working..same symptoms in school...we decided to look for things that mimic ADD and ADHD.  It turns out he had a couple of things.  First, his lung capacity was only 65% - we knew he had asthma..was getting treatment..but did not know he was having trouble breathing normally.  Symtoms would be that after exercise at school...he would just sit at his desk and act lethargic and not pay attention.  AFter getting on allergy shots and Advair (opens lungs)...this changed.  The Second thing was that he had always had trouble writing, and copying words in school  Also after reading a light...would complain of headaches.  After the school did a vision test (which was okay) they also did a Dyslexia and an Irlen test.  Turns out he had Scotopic Sensitivity (Irlen).  When he looks at words on white paper...they move and swirl.  The symptoms were again mimicing ADD when he had to read or take tests...not paying attention...looking away.

Bottom line...if you see a child whose symptoms are worsening during allergy season...it could be that his allergies are causing his ADD or ADHD symptoms.

My son is no longer on ADD meds...and I am glad that my school did the Irlen test....it really saved us.  I wish I could say my son's Dr. helped...but he was not interested in anything but putting him on meds.

one more note....here is a website that shows 50 things that can mimic ADHD
