ADHD and looking for Employment | ADHD Information
Hi, I recently finished Grad School and I have been looking for a job since June. I did a good job student teaching and I have good refrences, but I have not gotten a job that is anywhere near my level of expertise yet.
I try to be really on the ball in job interviews and make myself listen. When I write cover letters I try to throughly check for typos. But when I fill out applications I never check that I am disabled even though theoretically I could due to ADHD.
In the past ADHD has made my professional work difficult. I have never been fired because I left a job when I knew (or thought) things were looking bad for me, sort of "get out while the getting's good" mentality. I have quit instead of dealing with anal-rentive staff members who harrassed me about my ADHD behaviors. I have quit because I sometimes feel like my little fobiles have made me a target for energy vampires.
Now when I look for jobs, I still feel like I am a kid even though I am nearly 30 and have twelve years work experience and six years of college behind me.
Is anyone else have trouble finding a job?
Keeping a job when it gets boring or things get tough?
Does anyone else take Ritalin and does it help you "behave" at work?
So far I am trying to find a job where I can be active and practice teaching but I am afraid that the "doorkeepers"; aka. anal rententive secretaries/hr staff are keeping my file back because I did misspell or I changed colleges too many times or I have had too many jobs.
Anyone have any experience trying to break through these barriers?
Sometimes, if you start in a voluntary capacity within an organisation/school, you can get a good foot in the door.
And sometimes acknowledging that you may have to start at the bottom, regardless of what degree you have, is something you cannot avoid. What is important is Getting a Job - then if you do a good Job, you may get into a field or area that you wished to.
Never quit on your dreams however, and keep striving to fulfil them, but remember, we all have to pay our bills too. So dont knock everything back, take something!.
