? about drug ingredients | ADHD Information
My daughter has been on focalin for about 10 days. I have done some investigating and now am led to believe that focalin is the other name for deximethaline. I see meth and am scared to death that I am introducing her to a drug that could ruin her life. Am I wrong in thinking that this is the same ingredients that the methamphetimines are. What are the risks of her becoming dependent as a child and then when she is older takes them for recreation use to make her life easier, I am the one that introduced her to the drug it would be my fault. O.k. I know that this will help her now but what about in the future? As far as I know there isn't a connection to the meds you give your child now and them becoming a drug addict later in life. I think I read a study and it didn't see the connection. Life experiences exposure to illegal drugs etc... play a bigger role. I look at it in way that these kids need stimulates to calm down so they probably won't get the "high" that a "normal" person will get with using meth or whatever. My 13 year old is add and I do not have him medicated and in one of my many, many, many, drug lectures of how bad drugs are to him I pointed out that he wouldn't get high from them because of what he has. My youngest is medicated because he is in need to have them to make it through the day. It is a personal decision to medicate and there are several different types you can try. You should talk to your doctor about your concerns about what you are giving your child. Thanks for the advice! I just worry that even though this will make it better for her and the rest of the family, I worry about her more wild side, mostly because she reminds me of myself when I was a kid and I always took the more fun and dangerous route. I think I would have been a good candidate for adhd. I feel better about the meds after your words of wisdom.the meds will probably diminish some of that impulsiveness and help her to be able to think before she acts. Maybe "tame her wild side" some. This will hopefully allow her to make safe choices.
Like Vicki said Focalin is dexmethylphenidate, a CNS stimulant. Studies have proven that children who are medicated for ADHD( those that indeed need meds) are less likely to experiment with drugs or "self Medicate" as teens and young adults.
Methamphetamines are an illegally produced "drug" and are not anything close to Focalin, Methamphetamines are produced drom a particular sinus medicine( generaly in toilets or bathtubs) Battery acid, the kind from cars, Gasoline, and all sorts of other horrible things.TOTALLY different from Focalin.
So don't worry, you are doing what is best for your child, not introducing her to drugs.
Focalin is dexmethylphenidate. It is the more centrally active isomer of methylphenidate (ritalin). And as Aaron'smom has stated, properly medicated kids are less likely to fall into substance abuse, more than likely because they are not seeking relief from ADHD symptoms, or hiding from school or relationship failure that can accompany untreated ADHD.
