The research I have done indicates that the Tova has a large rate of false positives and negatives making it a not really primary tool for diagnosis. I have a recent Barkley workshop DVD set. He also indicates that he does not have a lot of use for this type of test as a diagnostic tool. I know a lot of people use it but to me at least the validity does not seem to be too good. Might be your while to check it out on your own. Might suggest the help4adhd.org site connected with Chadd where you can ask questions and get feedback. I posted a question on the validity of the TOVA and they came back with pretty much the same conclusion I had come to.
Your mileage may vary but you may want to pursue another approach. The teaching hospitals medical school often have some very good clinics specializing in this disorder. Might be worth a try. You need the most accurate information you can get to be able to help your child.

My son received a TOVA test last week and according to the doctor he has mild to moderate ADHD with his main problem being impulsiveness. I am still a little confused about this test and the Standard Deviation part. He did have a 15%-16% jump on Commission errors on the last 2 quarters. When we started down this ADHD path we thought that he would be more of the inattentive type although he definitely has some issues with self-control. I am trying to find out what guidelines are used to determine that this increase in Commission Errors translates to being labeled mild to moderate ADHD. Can anyone shed light on this for me?
Information from a TOVA, or other tests of attention, is most useful in the context of a full neuropsychological evaluation. If a patient exhibits poor performance on a TOVA, a comprehensive assessment is still needed to clarify whether the findings reflect ADHD or another etiology. You would still need to get a FULL psychological evaluation before ADHD can be diagnosed. IMO the TOVA is not really accurate, and should not be the only diagnostic tool used.help him keep up his emotional development this will help with stress during learming times.
