If there are mood issues that have not become better with ADHD meds (or get worse), milder meds like Tenex or antidepressant/andtianxiety meds, the docs start "bringing out the big guns". If there is the presence of anxiety, severe ODD or aggression that seems to be refractive to treatment, they sometimes try a low dose of an atypical antipsychotic.
My youngest is on Risperdal because she goes into anxiety which comes out as aggression. She is also very skinny (has always been thin), so the weight gain (about 10lbs in the last 2 months) is a bonus for her.
I think you must mean Risperdal. Ripersal is an antipsychotic medication used to treat bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and pervasive developmental disorder. It seems a really heavy duty drug to be used to treat rebound. Maybe a different stimulant or a different dosing schedule could be tried. Riperdal has some pretty serious side effects too - including SERIOUS weight gain. I've read stories of some kids gaining 50 - 100 pounds on it.
The wiehgt gain is an issue on most of the A typical anti psychotics. DD took Abilify for a bit, which did wonders for her focus and moods, but she gained 40 lbs in 3 months. she is 10, so a huge weight gain is not a good thing.
