I have an 8 year old son that I had on Concerta that really helped with ADHD but his weight stayed the same for 2 1/2 years and he could not sleep at night and would not eat. I switched from that to Stratera which my dr said had a 35% chance to work since it was a non stimulant and he was right it did not work.
I am not day 2 on this Focalin and am seeing nothing. My dosage is way low for him but he has been so fidgety but hungry but can't sit still or listen for anything so I am hoping it will kick in but no results yet. yikes.
The dosage for Focalin is generally half the dose of other stims. My DD took it for a while, but she has issues with pill swallowing so we switvched to Daytrana when the med trials started, and have been on it ever since. Thank you so much, vickie, do you recall how long they were on it when the rebound and moodiness started? Thanks, CarolineWe did not really see any rebound, we were watching for it as instructed by the doc. The youngest has anxiety issues that may be made worse in the afternoon due to the meds wearing off. It is hard to tell with her.Hi Caroline,
Not sure if this will help or not, but my daughter just started Focalin last Tuesday. We haven't really seen any side effects. She's on the lowest dose so that may be why. She has been a lot less contrary. That's nice!
We're just getting into the ADHD meds. Do you mind me asking why you're switching from Concerta? That seems to be a common med. I want to know as much as I can about the pros and cons of each med. Thanks!
My son is almost 6 and has been on f xr 5 mg since he was barely 4. He is and has done very well on it. We've also been fortunate not to have needed to increase is dosage. We've had no weight problems and no side effects. It seemed to work pretty close to starting it. I do notice that when he misses a day(like when my insurance was switching over) that he is a little more active and handsy. However, when he is back on he is back to his sweet nature. We've been pretty fortuante that we haven't had to change or add other medicines to his routine.
(side note: we had a doctor/and have a new doctor that encouraged/es high protein/low carb diet ...diet determined to be necessary after he had our son do a glucose tolerance test. Both doctors believe in play therapy as well as do I... I really think it was and is a great combo for our son)
HI,
My son's been on it for alittle over a week now, he's 12 and weighs 60 pounds and is short for his age. Like one of the other writers he hadn't gained anything for about 2 years. He is very active though and does eat normal. Now since he's on the focalin I do notice he's always saying he's hungry, he seems to be falling asleep alittle earlier(if he keeps his toys and tv alone). I don't know if anyone else has notice this but he seem very "attached", over affectionate than before. He's always been the one to give hugs and kiss goodbye and such. But now he is I guess more. He seems more focused but at the same time he also seems to be alittle more defiant than usual. Does anyone know when the full affect kicks in? Thanks, Caroline

My almost 5 yr old daughter started on Focalin today. If anything, she seemed more hyperactive and aggressive - but less contrary - more compliant.
I hope this stuff works. I have alot of hopes and plans pinned to this. A better life for both of us.
