Non-stimulating medication | ADHD Information

My son stopped taking Adderall due to bad side effects. He was actually worse while on it than off it.  Dr. recommended a non-stimulating medication. Can anyone tell me what are some that treat ADHD?  Also, do they take awhile to build-up within the body before they work?

Thank you.

The most common non stim is Strattera.  It takes about 6 weeks to reach maximum effect.

My 7 year old son is on strattera and he is in his 8 th week. It took soooooo long to work. I have seen an improvement in the past week and a half. It has not helped much with impulsivity. We are happy withit so far. We will find out when he starts school again in the fall.

my daughter takes Desipramine, it is a tricylcic antidepressant, but can be prescribed for ADHD. It does take a few weeks to build in your system. She suffered side effects from every stimulant medication. We are doing pretty good on this right now. Diane V39281.5691550926

The most common Non Stimulant med is Strattera, but there are others, Wellbutrin is pretty common, as are the Atypical anti psychotics. These are all considered 3 rd line meds.

Most, like Strat DO take a while to work.Straterra takes 4-6 weeks after reaching the target, so really about 8 weeks total.

How old is he and when was he diagnosed? What type of dr? It is possible it is not ADHD but something else.
