My 14 year old takes them to feel "normal" and "in control". He too takes them every day. He has just gone on school camp (we are in Australia) for 4 nights and we spent alot of time arranging the strength and timing of meds so that there was never any down time. The meds greatly help with a child to socialise - to process and respond appropriately. During a camp this is just as important if not more important than when they are in a predictable situatation eg a classroom. I always say that my son off meds is like he's had one too many drinks and has lost control. He's really silly and inappropriate because he has little control. I don't want the other kids or teachers seeing this behaviour and either does he.
Great to see your son seeing the fact that he needs this.
We did a med change this year (Well a few, but one in particular) and I did not give my daughter any meds for a few days, she was asking me every day to PLEASE give her the meds. This was during school, but I dont think she really cared about the schoolwork part. She said when she doesnt take them she gets all silly and goofy and doesnt want to behave like that, but she cant help it.
He is 11 and knows how he feels like Bethann says the ADHD doesnt go away just because he doesnt have to take a test. These meds are making life easier for him. He wants to fit in socailly and that is very, very important, especially for 11 year olds. It's obviously your call, but I would send them. What is your reason not to? Just taking a med break? Does he need to gain weight or relieve some side effects?
My 11 year old son requested his ADHD meds. He has not been on them since first week in June. He wants to take them to be better in sports, and do things quicker and not to talk so much. I called his Dr and he said send them. He does well in school, top in his grade. Why does he need meds, he is off, no testing, why take them.Wow, how grown up is your son!
He must realize how much better he is focused and in control of any impulsive behavior when he has taken the meds versus the summer since the first week of camp.
Your son has ADHD every day 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. He also wants them to help him during his socialization, the not talking too much indicates that.
Our son takes meds everyday because he has adhd everyday, not just in school.
I personally hope my 10 year old takes them for as long as he feels he needs them into adulthood. I believe he is so much more successful in life since he began medication. And that is all I want for my son, to succeed in life.
I am in awe of your son's decision!
