My son was on his meds for an extended period of time. Then we gave him a month off. The first few weeks were a dream for us. He was his usual self with little focus problems. We bgan to doubt he even needed the meds anymore. However, after about 1/2 way into the 3rd week we bagan to see some of the things that triggered us to begin the meds in the first place. After a full on month, I was ready to pull my hair out. The meds had built up in his system.

We are now working through getting back on the pills.

Well, I don't have any experience with children and meds, but personally, when I am not on meds, I notice a personality change in myself. I am much more relaxed and carefree without the meds. When I am taking my Ritalin, I get LOTS of work done..... but thats all I want to do is work and concentrate and be anti-social.
My son Connor (14) has been on ADHD medication since he was 5 yrs. old. He has been on most of the medications, The last 3 years he has been on Adderall. He was moody, nasty, and generally pissed off at the world, OK so I'm thinking he's going through adolescents hormones are changing. I talked with his doctor and decided to try Ritalin La, He took it for a few days and said his heart was pounding. I told him he didn't have to take his medication till we saw the Doctor, Connor has been med free for 2 weeks now and it's been wonderful he is so nice to talk to, he does what I ask(sometimes) He is a joy to be around. Don't get me wrong he can be annoying I know his ADHD didn't go away but it's to good to be true. I'm waiting for him to turn back into Mr. Hyde. Has anyone had this happen?
Did he pick up any skills to cope with his organizational attention inconsistencies when he was still medicated?
My concern would be that he will not be able to function in an organized environment. If that happens maybe you'll both want to increase those skills and work towards a day when he doesn't need meds and so, get the best of both worlds

It may be that you are seeing some maturity. The real test will be how he deals with the pressures of school.

We take a med break each year to assess maturity and get a new unmedicated baseline.
