Hi there, my 11 year old just took his first dose of Vyvanse today. He's been on Adderall for 2 years and it worked well, but the last time we had to increase it, it made his stomach hurt and gave him headaches. So the Dr. told us to try Vyvanse and I'll also let you all know how he does on it. He's taking 50 mg to start. Hopefully we won't have to increase it.
I am skeptical about the out of control talking I've read about as a side effect on these boards. This kid talks my ear off all the time, maybe he'll have the opposite effect and not chew my ear off as much? LOL!
Brandon has just started Vyvanse two weeks ago, and has been taking it everyday for the past week. He is completely mellow. However, I guess that energy has to go somewhere, so he talks CONSTANTLY! The other bad thing we have noticed is that he get severe stomach aches. He is up as I speak. I don't know what to do about his belly.
We tried Daytrana first, but the stupid patch kept falling off, so we never really got to see if it was working.
We're very new to meds but are pretty happy with Vyvanse. My 6 yo son has ADHD. Tried the patch for a week- rebound was insane. He's been on Vyvanse for almost 3 weeks. On the 30mg he was hyperfocused and withdrawn, never smiled and wanted to be alone. So NOT like himself. Through trial and error we have found that for now 1/4 of 30 mg cap works best.
I use a syringe to measure 2 tsp (10ml) of water. Put the water into a mini tupperware, add the contents of one capsule then stir it around. Then I use a syringe to extract 1/2tsp (2.5ml). My kid is such a pill that I then add a little orange juice to the syringe. I save the remaning solution and give him 1/4tsp a day. So one cap lasts 4 days. It sounds more complicated than it is.
He's great on this med except he's a bit moody at times. The Nurse practioner at my phsych office suggested adding Lexapro. She feels like these are symptoms he's always had but are more obvious now that the hyperactivity is gone. I'm kind of nervous about that. How does she know it's not the drug causing the moodiness.
Has anyone else used lexapro along with a stimulant?
I am in agreeemnt Dylan has been on Vyvanse for a week now and he is a different child. He is mellow and wakes up happy. We do need to give him meotonium at night to help him sleep. Compared to the Adderal xr and the Focilin xr this is a great drug. I do agree about the nonrebound. It is great and no rages poo poo poo! One thing I do have a question about is does this drug stay in your body or does it live because he is happy when he wakes up he used to swear and be crazy in the am. This is the child that I have never seen and am glad to meet him!!!!!!!!!!

For all those who are happy with the vyvanse. What dose is our child on? esp. as compared to other adhd drugs? My dd has been on adderall XR 30 for over 2 years with good results but it wasn't working so good anymore. She is now trying vyvanse and is currently on 50mg and I am wondering if maybe she could use the 70mg. We have tryed everything over the past 3 1/2 years and I think vyvanse controls the hyperactivity the best for her (she is very adHHHHHd) but I am not seeing as much focus and motivation as on adderall. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I love reading about others' experiences with this new drug. It is very helpful!
Many thanks!!!!!!!!

dylan is on 50My almost 13 year old son started Vyvanse about one week ago. He's been on ritalin, focalin, concerta, daytrana, foc xr, strattera, you name it.
My name is Mindi and my 5 year old daughter has ADHD her name is Ellie. She was diagnosed in November 2006 and put on Strattera. She didn't do well on it at all so they changed her to 27mg of Concerta. She has been an out of control handful and I was at my wits end w/ her. I went to see her dr. Wed and he suggested to switch her to the new med Vyvanse. She started today and she is like a different child. She is so mellow today..and just totally different. It almost worries me how different she is.
Has anyone used this before, and if so what types of behavior changes did your child exhibit while on it?
Thanks for the info.
My 12 year old son has been on Vyvanse for about a week now. So far, so good. The best part is that he does not have the awful rebound that he had on the Daytrana patches.
Good luck!
My 7 year old son has been on vyvanse for a little over a week. Over the past 2 years we have tried everything, and so far Vyvanse has been the best medication for him.
His impulse and rage are way down. I do notice a bit of anxiety creeping in in the afternoon. He seems to get anxious when he is bored. I'm hoping it's something that will diminish once school starts and he is back into a regular routine. I'm anxious to hear how it works for others.
One more thing, I have to echo what cindyann said about not having the awful rebound effect. My son had a horrible rebound effect while on Adderal XR. It's so nice not having it with the vyvanse.
Hello
I am having the same stomach issues with my 5year old on Vyvanse for the past 3 days. Has it subsided? Thanks
Well, after being on Vvanse EVERYDAY for 2-1/2 weeks, the stomach pains subsided. Also, he was angry and violent in the evening when he first started it, but that had seemed to quit.
BUT, big BUT, I was sick on Wednesday and didn't give him his pill. He was okay except for jumping on the coach ALL day. Anyway, I resumed the medication yesterday, and it was like starting all over again. He was extremely tired, complained of his stomach hurting, and went through a few hours of extreme hatred for everyone.
I guess the moral of the story is that he can't have a day off from Vyvanse or we have to start from scratch...
OK, one more question
My 5yr old has been on vyvanse for 6 days now and he is very tired in the morning and says that he is sad. the afternoons are better but the mornings are hard - he is still impulsive and irritable. does this go away with use? or maybe it's not the right med for him? the dr. told me to halve the pill which is so hard to do since it's a powder and its not exact. Thoughts?
I have not tried it with my 6 year old, but am anxiously awaiting reports from others (although I know no med fits all!) He has been on Concerta for a couple years now (after trying several meds, except Strattera which I will not try) and some days it just doesn't seem to work, not to mention the nightly rebound hell.
The anger doesn't sound good. I hope that goes away for those of you whose child is experiencing it.
My 6 year old ds was on adderall March, April and May of this past school year with good results except for the fact that by the beginning of May, it had lost a lot of its effectiveness and was wearing off too soon. We took him off for the entire summer but need to start back up for school next week. We decided to try vyvanse and today is his first day (30mg) It is almost like he is on speed. His writing and reading are great but he CANNOT stop talking!!!!!!! He needs to be doing something and he is talking the ENTIRE time he is drawing or whatever he may be doing. He could not go to school like this b/c he can't be quiet. My dd tryed vyvanse with different results and the side effects got a lot better within 2 weeks. I am wondering if this excessive talking /speedy behavior might go away or if I should just put him back on adderall. ANy thoughts or experiences? The biggest benefit to me of vyvanse is how long it lasts.
Thanks so much!!!!!!!
I have no idea - I am brand new to meds. This is all trial and error. I really believe one pill does not work for everyone. I do not see benefits to Vyvanse in my 5 year old. It is too stong for him and lasts 12 hours. He is sad and crying a lot and now he is telling me he is always sad and how do I make it stop. So, I am stopping Vyvanse today and trying Focalin 5mg in a few days - maybe that will be better for him. Anyone like Focalin out there? Although, again, it may be a wonderdrug for some and a nightmare for others.
I think definitely different drugs effect people differently but the one thing I can tell you is that Adderall XR and Vyvanse are very different. Both of my kids have been on adderall with different but successful results. Both are trying Vyvanse and we are seeing different results between the two of them but also both are reacting much differently than they did to adderall. Shire is promoting Vyvanse as like adderall but better. It may be better for some but it is not the "same" as adderall.
It's me again
. Just wanted to give you all an update. DS 7 1/2 (adHd...with a very big H
and ODD) has been on Vyvanse for a little over a month. It is a life savor! He is so pleasant. His little sister is no longer scared that he is going to fly into a rage if she does the wrong thing. He is happy, and there is no rebound effect. That being said, the only side effects we are dealing with are, loss of appetite and a little harder to fall asleep at night. We've tried increasing his seroquel in hopes that it would help both the sleep and appetite. No luck yet. Also, we've noticed ever since we started the Vyvanse, he can't tolerate the milk (even lactose free). Any one else had this problem?
In the beginning he was very chatty. Talked all the time. That has seem to slow down. The other day he sat and played legos by himself for over an hour. This is huge! My DS is the type who needs constant attention and does not like to play alone. At times it has been very emotionally draining. As I'm sure many of you can relate.
[QUOTE=soberxinsanity] can adults take vyvanse or is it normally

To Klmac,
Just wondering if you have continued the Vyvanse with your DS? If so, did the excessive talking stop? We have tried the same and eventually stopped b/c the excessive talking was causing him to have a more difficult time focusing. Our doc did not think we tried it for that long and wants us to revisit the med.
Hi,
Just wondering to all the ones who talked about the kids talking non-stop. Did this go away? My son started on 20mgs. this morning and he is talking NON stop!!! He's driving me completely crazy! His beahvior seems better, but I don;t know if I can live with his as a result.....he won't even be able to sit through class like this.
Vyvanse has been a life changing godsend.
