Meds after Summer Break | ADHD Information
We do weekends, holiday, and summers off meds. DD has no issues with starting and stopping although some kids do. We do not have appetite issues, so it is not a matter of needing her to eat, she is Innattentive, so if she does not need the meds for school then she doesn't get them.
During the school year, my youngest gets the meds 7 days a week because that seems best for her. The oldest gets them for school only. When their needs change (driving, extensive afterschool activities) we will adjust to cover those times as well.
Hi, everyone! We have had a delightful summer break! My 7 year old
primarily inattentive has been off of his medadate cd all summer. Our
school starts in two weeks and I would like to start his meds now so he
can adjust to them again. Our doc says just start back at the 30mg. he
was taking...does anyone have any experience starting back after a break.
Thanks so much!JavaScript:AddSmileyIcon('')
Were there any side effects when first starting meds, or if a day was missed? If there were no side effects during the original dose determining phase, it should be fine. If there were side effects, you might re-open the discussion with the doc with your concerns and the history.
My kids can start and stop thier focalin (and previously concerta) without issue, but the only side effect we ever saw was lack of weight gain. When on the concerta, my oldest was on 36mg and youngest on 27mg. Everyone is different.
No, he really has had no side effects except appetite issues. I have loved
how he has eaten all summer. He has gained about 5 pounds. Also do you
give your kids med breaks on weekends...holidays etc. The summer went
so well I was thinking of asking the doctor what he thought about
weekends off. Thanks! Thanks everyone! I had a 10mg. left over and so I gave him that
yesterday...no effect at all. So today I am trying his 30mg. again. So I
hope he will not be a zombie. Poor fellow. I had having to medicate him
but his meds helped him turn around 100% at school, it was amazing. At
least he is with me today if he becomes out of it. Thanks! My son never had any symptoms really when adjusting to a new dose or when just missing one day. However, on both metadate cd and now concerta, after being off the entire summer we had to start back lower and work up. For instance, last year at the end of school he was taking 45 mg of concerta then was off for the summer. I gave him 36 mg thinking that was lower and would be great and he was a total zombie (very flat affect, no smiling, no personality, NO appetite) . Never had that effect before but we had worked up as needed. I had to drop back to 18 mg for two weeks then he actually took 36 mg till spring. I say all this to say that sometimes it is wise to start off slower even if just for a few days to make sure the child can still handle the same dosage or still needs it.
