my daughter also took Zoloft with some success, but was 12. She did ok on 12.5 mg.
5 seems so young. I am curous what her anxiety is like without the stimulants. Is she so anxious it gets in her way? My dd has always had anxiety too, but when she was youunger and pre stimulants she would worry and be hesitant, but I wouldnt say it "got in her way". As she got older and once we started treating her ADHD with meds it got worse. I am wondering if might now be worth trying some other ADHD meds, metadate, Focalin, Ritalin LA (we did pretty well on that). Even Straterra, a lot of people have success with Straterra, especially with co-exisitng anxiety. I think you're going to find that most meds will be recommended for over 6. This is mostly because most kids are not diagnosed until after that age. There are plenty of people who start meds before 6 and do fine though.
Welcome to the board.
Is she able to swallow pills?
Hi,
We're new to the forum since we are just at the beginning stages of working out the next steps in helping our 5 year old daughter with ADHD/Anxiety. Adderal and Daytrana both made her feel sick to her stomach and just changed her mood to much more anxious/withdrawn.
Her counselor is recommending either Zoloft or Prozac to try and work the anxiety component first. And, then, if the ADHD symptoms are still too strong, we'd look at a second.
Any one out there who's had a similar situation with a child in this age bracket? Most of the meds we read about are tested in kids over 6.
Thanks and looking forward to being part of the group!
My daughter is 7 and was placed on Zoloft a few months back since the Selegaline to treat her ADHD solved the ADHD but it was quickly apparent she had very bad anxiety. We are now trying to solve the anxiety w/ zoloft and then will follow to treat the ADHD with meds. The zoloft has been very problematic for her stomach (which sounds like your daughter also have a sensitive tummy) and we have to supplement w/ Prevacid. She was going to the bathroom (#2) in her pants often and generally had a stomach ache. She now also has a stomach ache but the soiling her pants is no longer since the prevacid started.
The zoloft works very very well and in fact her learning w/ her tutor this summer has been outstanding. She has the ADHD symptoms for sure but w/out the anxiety it's quite a bit more mellow. I am torn about whether to continue the zoloft w/ prevacid and I feel a bit alone frankly since her psychiatrist is happy to have her cured from an anxiety standpoint but checked out as far as her physical symptoms go.
I would recommend it but be mindful of the stomach probs. It is apparently "rare" to have issues but my daughter has always had a sensitive tummy - so watch it closely.
All the best.
