Hi Kelly,
OH yeah, I can relate....
My husband and I BOTH have ADHD. We moved in Jan of this year and didn't do the bulk of our unpacking for about 5 months or so. We both hate unpacking and the task seemed daunting at the time. We both are newly diagnosed, so once we started to get effect from meds, we were more motivated to get it done. For me, getting started is the hard part. I can suggest breaking it up into smaller, more managable work. You can plan to unpack ONE room, or even just ONE box each day. In all likelihood, you will end up doing more than one box at a time, even if you don't finish a room.
I just organized/unpacked and cleaned our master bathroom last weekend. All that was unpacked previouly were essentials, like shampoo etc....
Still have several boxes to deal with, but we are in the beginning stages of buying a house, so I am going to wait before I dive into those....
Good luck!
Hi! I am new here but I was wondering if anyone could help me. I am 29 years old and diagnosed ADHD-HI/I when I was a kid. There is lots more but whatever.
I feel kinda silly since this is not that big of a deal but....
Anyway major issue of the moment. I just moved and although this is so not the first time I have moved, for some reason I can not seem to get unpacked. I guess the frist issue is that I am moving from a 2 bedroom to a two bedroom I share with a roomate. I have filled both my room, her room and the living room with all my stuff. I can't seem to get organized at all. I bought the book how to organize you life with ADHD or what ever it was called but now I can't find it and it is really not helping. The other issue is that I am so overwelmed by the thought of having to unpack I can't even start. I don't know where to start. Finally, I will admit I am a packrat and this is why I have so much stuff everywhere. I don't want to throw things away especially when you will never know when you need it.
So I guess I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what can I do to fix it. Or if you have suggestions on how to get over some of this stuff.
Thanks!!
Kelly
yes, I think asking for a friend to help is the best. sometimes it's just too much, where to start, where to put stuff, you bring in another person, and they make it seem so easy, even if they only help for a couple hours, it gets the ball rolling.oh i know whatcha mean!!!
i'm so messy and unorganized! my junk is everywhere. and when i "clean" i shuffle it into boxes and i have boxes and drawers of misc everything! i do photography and i have backdrops mixed with clothes mixed with chords and cds. i'm a disaster. i think the problem is that i have too much stuff and no clue how i shoudl organize it and i can't see me dealing with it long enough to make a change.
i know the solution is to just dive in and do it. but that fills my head with too many ideas.
And you're probably thinking, "If only I could take the "h" part of the ADHD and focus it where I want it. Everything would be just fine! Unpacking--such an overwhelming thing! yuck!
Here's a couple of ideas. Do you have any good friends that live near your new home? I asked this because, most of my friends tend to be really organized and on the ball. So, when I have an overwhelming task like what you have now, I'll just say to one of them, "Don't you want to come over one evening and help me get my kitchen organized." "I'll order a pizza and get some beer!" My friends know me well enough to know that I really do need help with these things. When all else fails, and this is my second idea, I'll pay the housekeeper to come over and just stay in the room with me to help me stay on task. Like just yesterday when i was reorganizing and cleaning out my multipurpose room which had, over the last year, turned into a junk room. She came out and worked with me. Sometimes I'd ask her, what do you think we should do next. But, the main thing for me is just having somebody else there. I find that unstructured time is the worst! No amount of Adderall is going to help me there. My Adderall only helps me with really structured activities like work!
