switching meds during school year? | ADHD Information

my doc asked me if i was getting consistent duration from morning to evening.  i asked what he meant and he said does your add xr work the same everyday from day to day from morning til 7 or 8 and i said well of course not.  some days i'm moody later in the afernoon because it normally wears off around 3:30/4, 4:30 if i'm lucky.

he said vyvanse is from makers of add xr.  it's amph based like add xr but the way it's broken down in the body offers consistent duration from morning (starts working for me within 30 min. to evevning).  It's a step up from add xr basically is what i gathered.  He asked if i wanted to at least try it with a free trial so i decided to and i LOVE it.

That's why i'm thinking about changing my sons med.  i had the same thoughts as you guys but if he could get much improvement (like i have) then i'm wondering if i should give him that opportunity but just wanted to see what others thought.

it might be worth trying if you see your son needs an adjustement. So if you were thinking maybe time to "tweak" his dose, try the switch then. I would have a hard time switching if things were going well, but we struggle so much with side effects, med changes put me in panic . There's a thread on here on Vyvanse, some seem to be having some insomnia issues, so you may want to wait and try it NOT during school, just in case.see that's what i'm debating with.  he is fine on add xr but so was i.  i made the switch to vyvanse and am doing better than i thought i could/would so i'm torn that maybe it will take him to the next level like it did with me....what to do?

Why did you choose to switch? What was your dr's motivation? I've never heard of Vyvanse. What is its benefit over Adderall XR?

I belong to the "ain't broke, don't fix" camp.

I agree if the meds are working fine i would switch.

just wanted to know other parents thoughts on switching meds during the school year.  I have a son that is going back to school here shortly and he is on add xr.  I was on add xr and switched to vyvanse.  I want him to do the same but didn't switch recently so next time we go back he will be in school.  any experience from anyone who has done this and/or thinks this is a good/bad idea?????

all the thoughts are greatly appreciated.

How is he doing on the adderrall xr?  If it ain't broke, don't fix it!  Seriously, if the med is working well for him, there's no reason to change.  If there are significant negatives, then it's worth it.I agree, if the Adderall is working stay with it. Switching meds for no reason is too hard on kids, and what if you have to swicth back?
