I was always a pretty skinny kid too and I can relate to being self conscious about it when I was younger. I am new to ADD meds but everything I have read says that they do effect your appetite a great deal. As I got older I filled out a little bit, but I am still a little on the skinny side (5'11" and about 170lbs). I began a diet and weigt training routine about a year ago. Not neccessarily to gain weight but just because I am not a teenager anymore and I want to stay healthy as I get older. I have found that the diet and weight training have added a good deal of muscle to my body. I don't know what kind of training and diet would be healthy and safe for a 15 year old, but it seems like it might be something for you to look into. On another note, even though I was skinny as a kid I still had lots of friends and did okay with the girls. I considered myself somewhat lanky and awkward looking, but I was always a fairly confident and outgoing person. I guess the point is that being a good person, being confident (even if it is an illusion sometimes!) and just generaly being a person that other people enjoy being around can get you pretty far sometimes--even if you are a skinny little dork like me!
hi joseph
i think your body uses up the fat instead of storing it. GOOD THING. at your age it's normal to go through this stage. if you really want to gain weight drink lots of milkshakes, french fries but then again it's not really healthy for you. why not ask your parents about a weight gain protein powder that's chocolate.
Luvmykids0239328.8520717593Hi Joseph,
My son also takes concerta and became really skinny for the first 1 1/2 years. We let him eat whatever he wanted when he would eat!
We made fatening shakes with whole milk, candy bars, sandwiches, fries, etc. Anything just to get calories in him. He then leveled off on his own and started filling out.
There is a medication that your doctor can prescribe for you to take that will make you eat, to the point that you may eventually over eat.
My son takes guanfacine that I also thinks helps him eat, but it is only after 5pm.
100lbs sounds very skinny, what is your height? my son is 10 and weights 100 lbs and just about 5 ft tall
I know just how you feel. Some of us naturally have a fast metabolism that allows us to shed weight like nothing. The meds pretty much gives us no choice, but to shed it. If you feel this is affecting your self-esteem, talk to your parents about making an appointment with the doctor. Most of the time they can give you something to gain a bit of weight to get to a stable weight, and from there on you can follow a certain diet plan. As omgiamgoingnuts said, the protein powder is also quite popular to gain weight. It doesn't taste that wonderful, but with the motivation to gain weight, I'm sure some of us will drink just about anything that'll help. Anyhow, don't be afraid to talk to your parents about it. Just remember, things aren't always as they appear to be.Thank you all for the help,
but tell me more about these shakes im interested in finding out how to make some so i can get bigger
Joseph,
Have you discussed this with you doctor? At 15, you should be a part of managing your ADHD. You might neeed a change in meds. You need to start taking a more active role in your health care. You should know what medication you are taking, what doses and why. Just think about you being in an accident and the hospital not being able to get in contact with your parents. At least write this information on a card and keep it in your wallet.
Talk to your parents about high protein shakes that you could drink to help you gain weight. Discuss some of the products available for weight lifers. Have you talked to them about how much your weight bothers you? They might be just worried about your weight as you.
I am constantly monitoring my son's eating. I have to remind him to eat. He just gained 2 pounds. He still weighs less than last August, but has grown 8 inches taller.
It may be a constant battle for you while you are on medication. What is more important--being skinny and able to function or being heavier and unable to function in the world?
we gave my daughter Carnation Instant Breakfast, but made them with whole milk and ice cream. Chocolate with milk and chocoalte ice cream, or strawberry and used a whole banana and vanilla ice cream. She LOVED them and if you can drink that with your breakfast, LOTS of protein and LOTS of calories!Ramon
I was just looking in the cabinet and noticed my box of Carnation Instant
Breakfast that I got for my son. He decided he didn't like the texture. .He said it was gritty. You might want to try it in the blender with whole milk , a banana and a couple of ice cubes. If you want more variety, try some of the flavoured coffee syrups. You can get small sample bottles. Hazelnut or French Vanilla is good in the vanilla variety. The banana add a thick creamy texture.
Hi There.
Have you thought of seeing your doc and discussing this with him as you sound very upset by your current state!
I too was a skinny kid growing up (now I'm fatter) and I hated every moment of it but luckily for me I did gain some weight..a bit too much weight and I'm in the process of losing that weight.

'We buy the shakes in the fresh fruits and vegetables aisle in the supermarket. We buy chocolate/banana and add a fresh banana with milk or icecream and ice to make it thick and blend it in a blender. We also buy strawberry and add banana or fresh strawberries to that. There is orange, vanilla and pineapple to chose from as well.
The calories are a good amount plus it is healthy.
It is a meal in a shake.
I agree that you should discuss your concerns with your doctor. He or she can recommend some things to help you gain weight. Do you get hungry at night after the medicine wears off? Also, do you take the medicine after you eat breakfast? It is normal for the medicine to decrease how much you want to eat, but if you can eat breakfast and eat at night after it wears off, that would help. It's also possible that it's not the medicine that's making you really skinny. Some people's bodies are normally that way, especially a teenager whose body is going through a lot of change. The doctor could talk to you about safe ways to change this, maybe the protein shakes and maybe weightlifting? Definitely talk to your doctor before starting any weightlifting! It could be very dangerous otherwise.
Also, when you introduced yourself, I'm not sure if you gave out your first and last name. If you did, I'd click the Edit button and change your post. I've always been told to be very careful online and NEVER give out your last name.
Good luck! You WILL figure out a way to feel better about how you look.
