Concerta and sleeplessness | ADHD Information

Try giving him Melatonin at night (3mg).  Our son (age 7) has been on Concerta for a year or so now and has the same problem.  Melatonin was suggested by his doctor and it really works.  It's a herbal supplement that tricks your body into thinking it is later than it is, making you go to sleep.  You can get it wherever vitamins are sold usually, but if you have problems finding it, you can try one of those all-natural stores.  Keep in mind that it will take effect in about 15-30 minutes, so if your child reads to you at bedtime like ours does, give it to him after reading or else he'll be too tired to finish his homework.

I take Concerta and I am a teen and I have not had any trouble sleeping at night. Maybe your kid is taking to much Concerta. You should talk to his Doctor.

This is a follow up to my original post. My son's doctor prescribed 25 mg Trazodone for him to take an hour before bed. When I give it to him, he doesn't appear to be sleepy. However, he does fall asleep within 20-30 minutes when I put him to bed. He is now able to get up in the morning for school without a problem.

im not really sure why but ever since i've been on concerta i've had this dependency on ciggarettes and alcohol. i have a little better focus and more energy its just that having that dependency makes me do a lot worse in life where as the concerta is supposed to be helping me. like i will drink or something on a school night with some of my friends and then not end up going to school the next day. most of the time it's a very strong need for it. i feel like i should switch to aderall, i've been reading a lot on this site about people who have switched from concerta to aderall with great results im just wondering if anyone in here has had the same problem with this product and sucess with aderall... thanks a lot .

I'm on Adderall and absolutely love it. Although people have reported they feel the need to smoke more while on it. I used to smoke a lot, I quit a year ago without any problem but I'm weird in that it is really hard for me to get addicted to stuff. Just thought I'd let you know about the adderall might be something you want to discuss with your doctor.

Also Welbutrin supposedly is great for helping people stop smoking or drinking. If the concerta works (other then the dependancy) for you maybe adding welbutrin to what you normally take will balance you out.

MafiaKiddo38337.4458680556I'm 30 and taking concerta for about a month 36mg at 6am when I get up for work.  On average I can't fall asleep until 3am. 3 hours a nite, so yes  I have had problems with sleep.Hello My son is 7  and yes he has the same problem.  He doesn't go to sleep til about 1 am I have told the dr and she  don't seem concerned.  But of course I am.  Glad I just read the above from CinciMom as I think I will give it a go seen as its herbal why not.
Hi My son has been on concerta for a very long time now, he was just put up to 72.mg, he has never had problems falling to sleep. He is in bed by nine, then he plays his game boy advance for a half hour, because it clams him down and makes him tired, and then he is usually out by 10 at the latest.

I have a 26 yr old son with ADD. We live in England and it took 2 years from diagnosis to get medication. He is back on ritalin, did not like concerta, said it made him feel unwell. Can someone tell me what adderall is. Is it new, is it a stimulant or what?

He has trouble getting up in the morning particularly when he hasnt slept well and he has problems finding his way to places that he does not know well, often getting lost. Is this common?

This is my second message because there is so much I want to ask from people who know what they are talking about. My son was told that the latest drug from America for ADD is atomoxetine. Can anyone who has tried this tell me of their experience of it.

With ritalin being taken every 3/4 hours how do you remember to take it if memory is a problem.

Are there any issues about employment when taking these medications in America.

Is there any advice about mood swings, what is your experience.? Is it the medication? How are they best dealt with?

I have found that doctors I have met do not have the experience to advise on the behavioural aspects of the condition.

Why does my son not learn from experience and continue in non productive behaviours that just give him hassle?

Sorry for all this but living with a husband and son with ADD for 32 and 26 years, most of the time undiagnosed has given me lots of questions that books and doctors cannot always resolve. I would like to hear from young people of my sons age who can advise me on how best to be helpful. Its hard trying to get it right

I personally have not had problems falling asleep when I take meds....I find that I actually get to sleep a lot easier if they are still working because it keeps me from going 1,000mph. However, many people do experience troubles sleeping. Changing the dose, type of medication, or time that it's taken are often steps taken to alleviate the sleeplessness.....some people also use a "sleep-inducer" to help wind-down. Hope this helps a little, I'm sure other people will have input as well! Talking with his dr. would be the best idea, though, regardless of what people say! Good luck!My 8 year-old son started Concerta this past weekend. I give it to him as soon as he wakes up in the morning. Since then, he has not been able to fall asleep until 1 or 2 AM. I am wondering if anyone has had experience with this side effect. I am hoping that it is temporary.
