Can stimulants make the H worse? | ADHD Information

Yes this is his first stimulant.  His first ADHD med at all.  He is 6 years old and we've been battling this for years but he has just reached the age where the dr. would actual diagnose and prescribe something.  I guess I'm going to have to wait and see what the dr. says whenever I hear back from them.

I'll try to do the walk or something with him, he's calmed down a bit since I first posted, it seems to come in spurts, almost like everytime the medicine is released again.

Well, it looks like I have an even bigger problem.  One that I thought was a possibility but nobody would ever pay attention to me when I brought it up.  My son's dr. did not have all the notes from his counselor when we saw her Monday.  She has since got them and just called me a bit ago.  I have always tried to get someone to see if it was possible my son is actually bi polar.  Once the pediatrician got the rest of the notes from the counselor this became her biggest concern because of his family history of bi polar and his rages.  Both of his parents have it, at least one grandparent, and two great grandparents.  So now we're starting all over.  She is going to get him in with a child psychiatrist and call me Monday with the information.  All I ask is she forward ALL of his records to the new dr. so s/he will have the background before we even walk in the room.  She also said since I thought the concerta was making him worse, to stop it.  It was making him talk so fast that he was getting confused, which is very unlike him.  So we may have had the wrong diagnosis of ADHD, or maybe it is ADHD combined with bi polar.  It sounds as if I have a whole 'nother world opening up before me.  I'm a bit overwhelmed but also feel as if we may be headed in the right direction for the first time yet.  Thanks for listening to me here, everyone has been so nice and helpful.  Wish us luck on this next journey, I already feel the pain in me because I know how awful bi polar has made my life.  (I've only had two manic epidsodes in my life, I mainly deal with the depression side of it)  My poor baby.

Well at least you know what it is and get get the correct treatment, the adhd meds were making him over stimulated!!! Look forward to helping him and the light at the end of the tunnel will soon come!!!! I THINK IT SHOWS HOW AWESOME YOU ARE AS A MOM TO KNOW SOMETHING JUST WASNT RIGHT!!!

Wow, thanks for the kind words.  I sure don't feel like a very good mother right now.  I feel like I've failed somewhere along the way.  I do look forward to hopefully finding something to finally helping my whole family with this issue.  Thanks for all your help Steph, I have really appreciated it a great deal.

we all have moments like that and that is why we all came to this forum it is a great support no matter what our child has or is doing...it got me through alot of things and still does...your welcome. let us know the outcome of monday :-)

can you take him for a walk? to see if he just needs to burn of the energy? sometimes even with the meds my son bounces...a walk or a bike ride seems to do the trick. Can you try to refocus him until the meds have time to work (where he has only had the meds for a few days)

is this the 1st stimulant he's tried? Even though most all ADHD meds are
stimulants, they can all have a different affect.

Concerta makes me a little edgy/jittery but does help with focus/energy.
Adderall (on low dosages) actually puts me to sleep and it is amphetamine.

unfortunately, this can be a puzzle trying to figure out. I'm on my 4th
different med since being diagnosed (wellbutrin, adderall, concerta and now
vyvanse). wellbutrin did nothing, adderall made me sleepy, concerta made
me nervous and jittery and didn't like the rebound. I just started Vyvanse so
I don't know how it will do yet but I sure hope this one works. I know what
you're going through. You haven't said when his behavior starts.  Is it all day or late in the afternoon?  What dose is he on?  Sometimes the dosage needs to be increased .  Sometimes there is rebound when the med is leaving the child's system.  And, sometimes, you may need a different med.  Talk to the doctor. The behavior starts to get really "chatty" early on and stays that way, and the bouncing all over the couch and running through the house is going on when the med should have already kicked in.  Last night about when the med should have wore off definitely was worse, so there probably was rebound but even when the medicine should be doing it's job he seems worse.  He's only on 18mg of concerta right now.  I do have a call in to my dr. I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this.  Thanks scaredofstims39311.4499421296It's only my son's second day of concerta but I swear he is worse than before he started it.  He can't seem to talk fast enough and he is even more hyper than before.  He's also complaining of a headache.  I think we were better off before the stimulant, is that possible?
