Strattera? Good or bad? | ADHD Information

Share
My DD (age 7) is about to start on Strattera tomorrow night. We have tried Adderall XR and Daytrana patch, both worked fine for about 1-2 months then chaos. She also has heightened sensory issues (I suspect light Aspergers but it has not been confirmed yet) and they are exacerbated with these stim meds. I want to try Strattera as it is a non stimulant and see if its the stimulants that are making her this way. She has been picking her hair out, clawing her skin and asking me "is there anything crawling on me?" It got so bad we havent been able to leave the house the past two weeks so today I said enough is enough.

The pedi said Strattera has a low success rate but we can try it. Can anyone share good or bad results on this med? TIA.

Tina

I have heard that the success rate is 50% to 70% for Straterra, and it is less likely to work for children with co-morbids. Getting the dosage right is the key.

Thanks so much! Yes the doctor said you start at the low dose for 4 days and then slowly move up. I am hopeful this will work out. I am having major surgery beginning of Sept and hate to change now but the side effects of the Daytrana were too much to bear and with her starting school here next week (2nd grade) she couldnt function like that. *sigh

Tina my daughter got the same way with pulling at her hair and compulsive scratching on stimulants this past year (Concerta). She is so much better off the stimulants. I am not sure how her focus will be for school, but we dont really have much choice.

Good luck with the Straterra.

My DD had excellent results with Strat. The only reason we stopped it was weight gain, but she has gained weight on ALL meds.

Strat needs to be started at 10 mgs and ramped slowly to the target dose. It will take 4-6 weeks after reaching target dose( so 6-8 weeks total) to see complete results. Too high or too low of a dose, or too fast of a ramp  can cause side effects, and mood swings. Tagrt dose is 1.2-1.8 mgs per kilo of body weight.
