HELP, new to drugs (rebound question) | ADHD Information

My ds was like yours after the stimulant wore off.  We've added guanfacine (generic for tenex), and that's helped with the impulsivity and hyperactivity at nighttime.  It does not help with focus.  It hasn't made our evenings perfect, but they are substantially better.

I wouldn't recommend adding too many medicines at once, so I'm afraid you may be stuck with the rebound for awhile.  Maybe try low-keyed stuff like extra computer time or TV time at night to help keep things calm?

Edited to add:  Some people do a booster dose of the stimulant in the late afternoon to make the evenings go better.  That wasn't an option for my child because he needs the stimulant to wear off in order to help him eat at night.

Mom2ADHDboy39313.8243171296Thanks! Rebound has gotten better, I gave him some Melatonin tonight
(0.75mg--thought I'd start low) and he seemed a little calmer (just a little)
and fell asleep in about 30 minutes, which is a big change. We'll see how he
feels in the morning.

I really appreciate this website. My 6 year old was just diagnosed with ADHD and we have put him on
Metadate CD. He has only been on it 3 days, but we have had some
major problems in the evenings. His impulsivity is worse at night, he
threw a ball and hit a little girl in the head, leaving a big gash. The next
night he had rescued a butterfly from a spiderweb and it died and he
cried (hard) for about 1/2 hour and then became extremely nasty to his
little brother, kicking and hitting my husband and I, and throwing books.
He has NEVER behaved so badly. He was inconsolible.

During the day, the meds are great, but at night he is miserable. What I
would like to know is does the rebound effect go away with repeated use,
or should we call the doctor on Monday. Have I given it enough of a
chance?

Thanks in advance for any advice.JennyM39313.1947569444

My son has been on a stimulant for over 5 months and there is a rebound that starts at about six. Another side effect of using stimulants is  difficulty to fall asleep. So, what I do is give him a very low dose of melatonin at the time he starts feeling very restless and he ends up getting quieter and falls asleep at about 8 to 8:30. This is a very personal idea that has worked for me; I have to admit that he shows rebound but I think it isn't that bad as of what I have read here many times. If I don't use the melatonin it could be 11pm and still he would be awake with lots of energy.

I suggest you to talk with the doc and tell him about your concern; maybe there is something that can be done to lighten the rebound.

Where do I get melatonin? Are any brands better than others?

I will most certainly call the doc in the morning.

Thanks so much.

you'll find it at any drugstore over the counter, and I don't really have a favorite brand,  I always get the one that offers the best deal. Melatonin is a natural sleeping aid.  Better call the doc first.

Good luck!!
