My child is struggling with anxiety | ADHD Information

My reply is will probably not be helpful to your situation, but my son is also
very anxious. It seemed worse when he was on Focalin XR and seems a
LITTLE bit better on Ritalin LA. (he also takes Clonidine 3 x a day.) I was
interested in the fact that your son also takes allergy meds, as my son does
also. He takes Zyrtec daily and occasionally takes a nasal spray. Surely the
allergy meds aren't causing a problem. I am also interested in any advise
that any one has to share about the anxiety issue.

My  7 year old boy is ADHD Combined Type and recently diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder.  He's been working with a cognitive behavioral therapist for months, and she's not made any progress with him.  He still cannot function in a place that has bugs, cannot stay in his own room all night, now can't stay on a separate floor of the house (that's since we tried to work on gradual desensitization for changing how he falls asleep).  This is the second therapist we tried.  The first therapist had more of an "eclectic" approach, and she made no progress with him (why we switched).  The second therapist feels it's time we consult with a child psychiatrist about anxiety medication.  Before resorting to this, I'd love to hear from those who have faced anxiety disorders.  I should add that he's had anxiety issues on and off before he started stimulants.  Also, I think the anxiety is a bit better when the stimulants are in his system.  So, I don't think the stimulants are the cause or making it worse.

Thanks so much for sharing any experience and/or advice!  I'd love to hear any suggestions how to ease the anxiety.  I'd also like to hear about people's experiences with anxiety medications, particularly in combo. with ADHD meds.
