Haldol is a very potent medication. I am concerned that the doctor wants to give it to such a young child. It can cause halucinations and other severe side effects.
It needs to be monitored very closely.
Hello my nephew is 10 years old and we have a serious problem. My nephew is Autistic with ADhd.He also has severe behavior issues.Very poor concentration. He is on Focalin 5 mg one in the morning and one at noon.Clonidine 1 3/4 in the morning and 1/2 tablet at night.Lorazepam three times a day for anxiety. My nephew when he doesn't get his way or has problems understanding what you are telling him than he will do destructive behavior to himself.I spoke with his Neuro and he wants to add Haldol to his other meds. One half pill twice a day. What do you all think? He is also having problems at school. He cannot stay at school because of his behavior.Hittting, spitting, kicking, and yelling to the top of his vioice. We get called to pick him up everyday. We are emotional frustrated and need advice. His focalin has been upped and that turned him into a zombie. He has been on every other med in the book.It is an anti psychotic and is generally used in people with BP, and schizophrenia. I too would be concerned about it's use in a young child, especially with the risk of Tardive Dyskinesia. The antipsychotics are used to treat aggression in children with autism and other issues. Haldol is an older, typical antipsychotic, the newer ones that work differently and with potentially fewer side effects are called atypical antipsychotics. Risperdal is actually approved for children with aggression in autism, where as the other choices have been studied and are used "off-label". These meds have some serious side effects, so make sure the doc has prepared you for what to look for (good and bad).
My youngest takes risperdal (anxiety that leads to aggressiveness) and has no side effects.
