Adderall XR | ADHD Information

Hello...my 8 year son was recently diagnosed 'borderline' ADHD. After years of behavior mods, etc, we finally decided to give meds a try. His neuro put him on Adderall XR 5 mg. He's been on it a week and we see no difference at all. It's my understanding this type of med should work right away (within hours, if it's going to work). Anyone know how long I should wait before asking my pediatrician to adjust it? Thanks...There is no "borderline" ADHD, it is either there or it isn't, like diabetes. Was he diagnosed by a Psych?  Adderall XR 5 mg is a really small dose and may just not be enough, it may need to be raised or changed to another med.

I do think one can have mild ADHD. My dd's ADHD is much more severe than my ds's ADHD. That being said, both my kids are on adderall XR and 5mg is a small dose esp. for an 8 year old. He may just need a little bit higher dose and one week is definitely enough time to see an effect.

Good Luck!

I agree that a week is plenty of time to see effect. Maybe you should get a referral to a child psychiatrist for med management? Just a suggestion. Thanks for your input. I think the neuro called him "borderline" b/c he strongly belieed that my son had a sleep disorder and that taking out his tonsils and adnoids would "solve everything"...if only it were that easy. We did a sleep study and it showed a very mild sleep disorder, but I took him to another hospital and the ENT there did not recommend a T&A. He felt that the risk was not worth it...the sleep disorder isn't really that bad at all. When I went back to the neuro, he said he wanted an ENT from their hospital to see him, but I said no. I felt that he was so intent on being correct about the sleep disorder that he wouldn't accept that maybe he was actually wrong (you had to be in his office to get the vibe that I did from him). Anyway, I just wasn't sure how long to wait to contact my pediatrician before asking if we can up his dosage. I know this takes time, but we are anxious for something to help him!I wouldn't wait much longer, but it is possible he is benefitting and you are not seeing it because he is in school?
