Her target dose is somewhere between 67 mgs and 100 mgs, for her weight. So she is still a bit low. I agree that she was ramped too fast, and will see side effects until she reaches the target dose for 4-6 weeks.
If she is not at her target does, she will have side effects? what if the dose she is on seems to be working for her symptoms?
i am confused about 'ramping'. everything i have read says that the initial dose is done for 3 days and then the permanent dose. i was impressed my doc wanted her to try the initial dose for 10 days.
texannie39324.575787037No the initial dose is NOT done for 3 days then raised to target. It is generally 10, 18, 20, 25, and so on until target is reached. Yes, she will still have side effects until target is reched, which can include mood swings. That is confusing... My Psychiatrist said that I should raise untill I see results and no side effects. However with it taking 6 weeks how exactly do I know? I with my first son I raised to the bottom of the range and then after 6 weeks I was still seeing some behavior so I went to the top of the range. That was great until he started school... After a few days we added 18 mgs of concerta first thing in the morning. He is doing great and without the concerta the weekends are fine. I am hopeful that after he settles in at school we can drop the concerta. They say the side effects go away after four weeks....
The doctor might as well have skipped the ramp up all together with a jump like that. She could have gotten 18 mg, then 25 mg, etc. If the stomach aches started when you switched from 10 mg to 60 mg, I'd call the doc and ask for a Starter Kit so that you can properly ramp and reduce the side effects.
NoTellin39324.3593055556No, the tummy aches were at the beginning.

she is 13, 125 lbs and 5'2
Thanks. We are going to try it in the am. She had been complaining of a stomach ache, I didn't think about it being the med. She started her period over the summer and thought maybe that was it.Give it to her in the morning with a big breakfast that includes protein. It's suppose to be most effective after you take it and then very slowly wear off. I think the night time dose is for ramping to avoid the stomach aches and sleepiness side effects if the child has those.
NoTellin39322.8734259259My 13 year old daughter has recently started Strattera. Is it better to take it at bedtime or in the am?She jumped from 10 to 60 mgs???? OMG thats WAY too big a jump. How much does she weigh? I agree that taking it at bedtime will help her through the typical side-effects such as getting tired and having a little stomach ache. We started Jacob on Strat this past June, to have all summer to get used to it. (He switched from stimulants.) But now, with his doctor's permission, he's taking it in the morning and that is working fine. Tomorrow is his first day at 2nd grade and we think he'll do very well.In the beginning , during the ramp period I would recommend her taking it in the evenings, around dinnertime. That will avoid sleep issues, and the side effects will be while she is sleeping and not noticing them. Once she gets past the 10 mgs, or possibly on the 18 for a few days you could try it in the mornings, but it is different for everyone.
When DD took Strat she took it in the evenings the entire time she was on it.
Thanks, she has taken the 10 mg for two weeks and has been on 60 for about a week. She has been taking it at bedtime, but now that school has started, I wondered if it was better to take first thing in the am. texannie39322.6646296296
