stimulants are like speed....caffine they are a stimulant. If someone truely doesnt have ADHD stimulants will make them hyper....My son who does not have ADHD took his brothers medication in error...and that kid was bouncing off the walls POISON CONTROL said it would wear off..
Caffine makes me sleepy because i am adhd.
my question is were you told your child had adhd
Hi,
I am no expert but my son's doc said stimulants will help even non-ADHD students focus better (I'm not sure about the hyper part). Therefore, just because the student now focuses better on stimulants is not an automatic indication that the child is ADHD. Too high of a dose of stimulants will make a true ADHD child/person seem hyper. My daughter who is not hyper but ADHD-inattentive was talking a mile a minute on too high of a dose of Adderall.
The added focus for non-ADHD persons is why the drug is so abused on college campuses. The students use/abuse the drug to stay awake to study and to hyper focus for tests. My friend has a son who tried it during college. He said it was amazing how he could focus for his tests. All this is just my observations and opinions. I hope your son was prescribed the patch before you put it on him. However, the risk of heart problems is rare (very rare).
Edbson, neither of my children has blood work, eeg ekg, etc., before they were prescribed stimulants. I probably should have insisted. You make a good point, but it is still very rare for stimulants to cause heart problems. I know most doctors (and I live in California) don't do all the blood work prior to prescribing stimulants but maybe they should.
Some do, some don't Ours does. DD had to have an initial EKG before the Daytrana med trials, even though we had had one the year before Shire insisted .it is a precaution, and a good one.
The pioint is, if someone is not prescribed a med they should not take it, too dangerous IMO.
edbson39325.566712963People should not take anyones meds of any kind, not just ADHD meds.
Especially children!
I truly hope your child was diangosed and this was his Daytrana you used.
You should NOT ever use meds prescribed for someone else like this. it could cause serious harm( heart problems). In order to determine if your child has ADHD he would need a Full P{sychiatric evaluation, including Bloodwork, eeg's and EKG's ( to check for heart problems). I'm sorry - you misuderstood - the meds WERE prescribed for my son - butDid the dr. start him on the lowest dose? Starting too high can be a shock to the system and for that alone cause an opposite reaction.
he could definitely still have ADHD and react this way if it was not the correct med or too high of a dose.[QUOTE=Mom2ADHDboy]Did the dr. start him on the lowest dose? Starting too high can be a shock to the system and for that alone cause an opposite reaction.

Yes, it could. Who diagnosed> A psychiatrist or a pediatrician? if A ped Diagnosed then it is possible to have a misdiagnosis, or if he is too young for a diagnosis altogether. OR it may just not be the right med.
