Vyvanse Experiences? | ADHD Information

my first post.  my 17 yr old daughter has been on many adhd meds.  Started vyvanse 2 1/2 months ago. She started a month at 30mg, now 50mg.  we notice more frequent anxiety attacks. BUT definitely better levels of concentration.  She is also on lamictal and abilify.  We want to take her off the abilify because of weight gain.... It's a tough call.

i wanted to start a new thread and find out who is on this med and how it is working for you or your dc?

My ds is on it. He is 14 and started over the summer. He just got diagnosed; I avoided the situation for years by homeschooling. Won't go into that issue here!

He didn't have any homework his first week of high school, but he did have one quiz and some classwork. He thinks his overall demeanor and behavior are better--paying attention more, not goofing around and alienating kids or annoying adults.

3omg seems to be doing something.

He did lose one whole binder and has no idea where it is. Otherwise he seems more organized and in a better mood.

Anyone else care to share?

My ds, 13 took his first 30mg dose of Vyvanse today.   He takes Zoloft for anxiety, but hadn't been taking anything for ADD since last year.   Tried the patch, too many side effects, and not enough good "effect".  The first 4 hours were good, about 5 hours into the Vyvanse, he is irritable and cranky, and out of sorts.  My husband is already ready to not give him another dose tomorrow.  I figure I'll try 3 more days and see how we do.  He is not in school today or tomorrow, so it made it a good time to try.  I'm afraid I was putting all my "eggs" in the Vyvanse basket, and we're going to be disappointed again!!!

I don't know if this is it, but it sounds like the Vyvanse may have just worn off.  I've been having the same thing happen, it doesn't last the full 12 hours but more like 8 hours and if I'm very active that day, it lasts even less.  I'll typically take it around 9am and then after about an hour will start to feel its effects, then by around 4 or 5pm, I feel it start to wear off and it usually comes with a mild headache for about 45min.  Also, the first two days I took it, when it wore off I felt really depressed and irritable.  That side effect did go away after the first 2 days, which may also be what is happening with your son as it wears off.

I know this doesn't really tell you what to do, but I have noticed after being on it for 10 days that some of the initial side effects do go away within the first couple of days.

ADHDgirl---thanks for the info.  He got better and then crabby again....had something to do with not really having any specific to do.   He's also grinding his teeth now.  I'll let you know how we make out the next couple days.  Thanks again!!

I was diagnosed with ADHD 2 weeks ago.  Having never taken stimulants before this was a first for me.  I've been taking Vyvanse 50mg for almost two weeks now.  This last week was definately better than the first week on it.  Every side effect available I was experiencing it...Honestly after the first day taking it...I really didn't want to take it ever again because I had the worst anxiety attack of my life within 2 hours of taking it.  If your just starting out on Vyvanse...give it time...the side effects do go away...at least from my experience.

My doctor wanted to try out Vyvanse 30mg because the Adderall XR was making me very depressed and very mood. I took Vyvanse 30 mg this morning i think i feel alot better with this new medication.. I'm not so mood or depressed at all on Vyvanse. Plus i think it was time to swich me off Adderall XR. Only side effect i had was little bit of tiredness and i wasn't so hungry today at all. My doctor also took me off Abilify cause i told him that made me to freaking tired.. I told him i can't take it because it just make too darn tired..

Sober,

If you have a high tolerance for medication, than I don't think 50mg will be too much.  Vyvanse has only been approved so far for children and so the dosages available 30mg, 50mg, and 70mg are based on children under 13 and not for adults.  I have a generally low tolerance for medication, (only need 1 aspirin or 1 benadryl to get the effects), and am currently taking 60mg of Vyvanse and find it works great.  You may notice when you start taking the Vyvanse that you have an initial increase in anxiety, but this should go away or lessen after a week or two.  But you may not since you have been on stimulant meds already.  Also, most of the adults taking Vyvanse that I've heard from have reported that it typically lasts 8-10 hours or less, not the full 12 hours.  It tends to last about 9-10 hours for me.  Also, since taking the 60mg dose, I get really tired in the evenings after it has worn off and sleep incredibly well now.  I have read in these forums that one person takes a Vyvanse in the morning and then in mid-afternoon has to take a short acting stimulant to continue being productive.

Vyvanse is different from other stimulants in the way it is activated in the body.  The actual stimulant in Vyvanse is bound to a protein that can only be removed when the drug goes through the digestive system into the liver.  The liver then removes the protein and the stimulant enters the bloodstream and goes to the brain.  This is different from other stimulants that can be crushed and either snorted or injected for a high.  If you were to do this with Vyvanse, the protein would remain bonded to the stimulant and there would be no high.  Like all stimulants, each person uses the drug at a different rate and height/weight does not seem to play a large part in it.

I get my Rx from CVS pharmacy.  I think it is funny that Rite Aid took over Eckerds where you are because Walgreens bought all the Eckerds in my town.  You might try Walmart or your grocery store pharmacies also because they probably see a lot more children Rx than the Rite Aid since busy parents often fill the Rx while they are shopping and this is more commonly prescribed for kids.

Also, I have found that when I take my Vyvanse, I can feel it starting to work about an hour after I took it, at about an hour and a half, I feel that it is fully effective and that lasts for most of the morning and into the afternoon.  Then it begins to become less noticeable, though I am still benefiting from it.  So it is much smoother from what I have heard because you don't have the mental "rush" feeling most of the time you are on it, but you are still very productive.

I have been taking concerta for a few months now..i just increased to 54 mg a few days ago. I asked my doc last visit about vyvanse, and he told me he has a patient who had ticks on concerta and adderall, so he switched him to vyyvanse and he's doing well. If he had his way, he was going to keep upping the concerta until I saw an effect (past the 72 max if necessary). But because of this patient he said he'll do what makes me happy. I am going to him again on wed (I see him every 4 weeks) but I still don't have the vyvanse b/c my mom is nervous about the meds, and she is planting ideas in her mind about me getting irritable, anxious, etc (my mom and I have never gotten along well, and whenever we get in an arguement she thinks it has something to do with the meds.)

My doc rx'd 50 mg, so I guess he's caught on that I have a high tolerance for meds..but he also said its more potent than concerta, so im wondering if 50 is too high for a starting dose. I have dealt with anxiety for most of my life, but it's been better for the past year or so. Also, I usually get my rx's @ rite aid (the former Eckerd, not original rite aid) but they don't have vyvanse (anyone know other pharmacies that would have it?) At least when I tell me doc my mother hasn't filled my prescription, he usually gives her the push she needs.

About how long it lasts, one of the main reasons I requested it from my doc is b/c i want something that lasts long. honestly i cant say how long concerta is lasting for me b/c it doesnt do much except give me more motivation (but no improvement in focus). But I've heard (mostly here) that vyvanse can last more than 12 hours for some people..I'm a little fuzzy w/ the whole metabolizing thing, but I'd like it to still be working around 10-11 PM, if at all possible, because my schoolday is later now, and I'm still doing work around that time (although that may also be attributable to inattention). anyway whenever i do actually start vyvanse i'll come back with what i'm hoping will be a more informative post. soberxinsanity39368.5257523148My dd is taking vyvanse 30mg and so far it seems to be helping.  Her appetite isn't very good for breakfast and lunch but she eats like a hog in the evenings and at night.  Dr. said that was fine as long as she was eating, then let her eat when she's hungry.  Before she was on strattera and for teh first few mnths it did has positive results.  Then it slowly wore off.  She now takes it at bedtime and takes vyvanse in the morning.  Hi--this is week 4 for my ds, 13, the side effects have worn off and he said he would rate the Vyvanse 11 on a scale of 1-10.  I'm hoping this trend continues!!!!

Yep, the teeth grinding thing happened to me the first few days too, that passed also...

Hi--day 2 was better, but about 5 hours in he was nauseaus(sp?) on and off for the rest of the day.  Today, sick again on and off and crabby as well.  I'm willing to give it a week...he says he likes the way it feels when it isn't making him sick!!!  Thanks

I've no experience with Vyvanse, but with its predessor (and close relative)  Adderall XR.  The side effects I innitally experienced either diminished, disappeared, or morphed over the first month or two--my point I guess is if you're getting benefits and are patient, much of what you experience at first will (hopefully) go away.

Also, like the miles-per-gallon claims by auto manufacturers, I suspect that drug company claims for duration effect are optimal maximums--i.e. you'll probably get less.

I am a 29yo adult woman recently diagnosed with ADHD.  I am keeping track of my daily experience with Vyvanse at http://ijustlearnedihaveadhdnowwhat.blogspot.com/

I have absolutely no experience with other stimulant or ADHD meds.  I have been on several antidepressants with no good results.  As far as the side effects on Vyvanse so far I have noticed that it can increase the frequency and intensity of my panic attacks at a higher dosage.  At 30mg I have only really noticed a mild decrease in appetite and a tendency to have mild anxiety attacks when I wouldn't normally have them.  At 60mg I noticed more severe anxiety attacks and a slightly dry mouth (though nothing like when I was on antidepressants).  I also had a mild headache as the drug wore off.

I feel like the 30mg is helping a little and I probably need a higher dose but will have to work out going back on Xanax or something for the anxiety attacks before upping the dose.

Glad you're keeping a daily record.  I too have had problems with panic attacks at higher doses of Vyvanse.  Often, it seemed, when the medication was wearing off.  It's such a horrific feeling and can leave you so exhausted afterwards.  Decreasing the dose did the trick, but I'm going to chat to my doctor tomorrow about possibly supplementing with an anti-anxiety med or something similar.  Like you, before taking Vyvanse I had only been prescribed anti-depressants, mostly SSRIs.  They always seemed only partially effective. My son, age 6, has just started on Vyvanse, 20 mg.  The first two days he was an absolute emotional wreck - going from sobbing over what seemed like nothing to being angry and belligerent with me when I'd offer to help back to sobbing to calm for a moment, and then it would start all over again.  The second day the duration of the emotional rollercoaster was less (about five hours instead of seven like the previous day), but it was still up and down.  Yesterday was his first day to go to school on the meds.  His teacher said he seemed calmer, no angry outbursts in class, but he was still up out of his seat and talking out of turn a lot.  There were no angry outbursts because he saved all the angry outbursts for me.    When I picked him up from after-school care, he was mad because I'd gotten there before he'd "done homework" (read: gotten to draw pictures).  Then he was snarling and angry and stomping his feet, and then he was sobbing because I'd said mean things to him (you know, mean things like "you need to get your backpack, it's time to go home") and screamed at him (I hadn't raised my voice one iota).  He was like that for about 45 minutes, and I was in tears myself.  He's not eating as much, but I'm not really worried about that.

How long does it take for the emotional lability to settle down?  And how long does it take to notice a difference in symptoms, if there's going to be one?  This emotional firestorm every day is just about to do me in, but if the meds may really kick in and help him focus at some point, it will be worth it.
My dd has been on 30mg Vyvanse for almost a year now. We moved from the Addreall XR b/c the it seemed to be wearing off too fast. She would take a dose on the am. the have to turn around and take 1/2 of a regular Adderall about 2:30/3:00 just to make it through homework. After a few months of that it seemed to be working less and less. The dr didn't want to up the dosage of Adderall XR b/c she was so little (8 yo and not quite 45lbs). He said Vyvanse was closely related to Adderall XR, and that it would work for her. Like I said, here we are about a year later, and things seem to be going downhill again. Mornings are a nightmare, with her taking 30 min. to just get dressed. When we get to school, she is all over the place. This morning, I was fussing b/c she hasn't brushed her hair, and was telling her how messy it looked. She turned to me and said, "I have a sharp nail and I'm not afraid to use it!"  I wish I knew what to do. The Vyvanse wears off around 3:30/4:00, and she takes it at 6:30 in the morning. I'm still waiting to get a referral to a specialist in ADHD so we can hopefully get the meds issue worked out.My daughter has been taking Vyvanse for 9 months now and the doctor upped her med to 40mg about 3 mouths ago.
She is in cross country and a jr in high school, she has passed out in almost every race this season.
She has been to a cardiologist at children's hopital and has had every test done. Everything is good. We just took her to a hematologist today. Her iron is a little low but not much.
She is now scared to run. Someone told her it was an anxiety attack. She is starting to believe it.
I've been reading about vyvanse and anxiety tonight and I think I've finally found the answer. WOW, maybe we should try a different med.
She wants to run in college and is afraid now she wont be able to. PLEASE HELPMy son is now back on Vyvanse after being on Concerta for almost two years.

Sad mom, if the med is working for her, can you make sure she is eating enough before running.  The only real side effect the Vyvanse has on my son is that he forgets to eat because he doesn't feel hungry.

Try to make sure that your daughter is eating enough of the right foods to fuel her body.
Sad Mom,
I would suspect that your daughter is not getting enough food into her body to support running cross country. She may need to have a small meal before a run or to eat more frequently on the days when she is running or training. I found vyvanse really suppressed my son appetite during the day, when it wore off he was starving. My son's pediatrician told me to make sure my son ate something like a cookie at lunch, so that his blood sugar did not get too low between meals.

Perhaps your daughter can try a high protein meal like turkey om whole wheat 15-30 minutes before a run.  Or keep a few protein bars in her backpack to keep her blood sugar from getting too low. She doesn't have to eat a lot, even just half a sandwich may do the trick.

Have your daughter describe how she feels before she passed out. Look up the symptoms of low blood sugar and you might find it is what she is describing. If that is the case, have her eat more often before running.

Keep us up to date on what happens to her and if eating more often helps.
Reta
We just found out today it is not vyvanse (thank God!!!) She has low ferritin a 6 it suppose to be 30 for runners.
Thanks for the update.

Research iron. It is very rough on the system. Have her start slowly. It can cause constipation, so she might need a stool softener. Iron is very poorly absorbed, only about 10%. You can increase absorption by taking it with some vitamin C.

I had a very rough time taking it, it irritated my stomach.
Reta

Hey! love that ADHD girl is blogging about her experience! must be quite healing to do that.

I started Vyvanse about 5 days ago. I came on the boards because last night I had HORRIBLE nightmares, unlike any I've ever had. Also, I'm having some insomnia which I never experienced with adderall or straterra. Otherwise I really like the Vyvanse during the day...much milder feeling than any stimulant I've tried. I do get some anxiety when I'm coming off of it. Anyone been on it longer so they can tell me if these side effects get better with time?

I am also taking a new antidepressant called viibryd. Anyone else tried it yet? I guess I'm curious if my nightmares are part of taking both and starting them at the same time...

Kate,
I did some research on your anti-depressant, insomnia and strange dreams are listed as a side effect. I used Drug.com, the advanced consumer. Insomnia is listed a more common side effect and the dreams is less common. (http://www.drugs.com/cons/viibryd.html)

When do you go back to the doctor? Call the office in the morning and tell them about the side effects you are experiencing, especially the anxiety.
Reta
Thanks, Reta. I will call the doc in the AM. I don't think the anxiety is caused by the viibryd (anti-dep) because I took it for about 3 weeks prior to starting vyvanse. However, good to know that Insomnia is a common side-effect. I NEVER have trouble sleeping and its been terrible for me (I have a baby and don't get enough as it is)!

I have been taking Vyvanse for about a month now. The first day I took 30 mg and it worked great, but after a few days it was not too great. My dr told me to play around with the dosage. ( he gave me 2 weeks worth of 30mg, and 2 weeks of 50mg)  So I went from 30mg, to 50mg, then to 60mg, and finally 80mg. With each increased dosage it would work a good part of the day, but again after a couple days or so It only seemed to work in the A.M and I would be horribly cranky, and tired in the afternoon and evening.

I have not tried any other A.D.H.D medications, and I dont know if its just the Vyvanse or what. I go back to my Dr. next week. so hopefully I can get it figured out.

Thanks reruho! I will have to try and eat something in the afternoons. I cant eat much breakfast as I have stomach issues, so I usually wont eat until dinner (which I know is not good)

My mom said she had the same problem with "crashing" in the afternoons when she was taking Adderall XR and is now on the patch, but it gives her bad rashes. Since I already have sensitive skin the patch is a last resort for me.

I see my Dr on tuesday hopefully I can figure it out!

You can try Carnation Instant Breakfast or a fruit smoothie with protein powder. I buy protein powder and add it to my fruit smoothies I make at home. I have a great recipe for a green tea fruit smoothie. I even add the powder to my instant oatmeal. Carnation Instant Breakfast is a favorite with a lot of parents of ADHD children. They use whole milk and ice cream in making it so they can get some calories (and hopefully weight onto) their children. My son won't drink it, he doesn't like the texture, says it tastes gritty. Another possibility can be a protein bar. They come in a lot of flavors, but most have chocolate on them and I am one of those people that doesn't really like chocolate.

You really need to eat something in the mornings, have you thought of reversing your meals? I am not a big egg/ breakfast food fan. I am perfectly happy to have a bow of soup of leftover spaghetti for breakfast. Grilled cheese is another quickie that I used to make my daughter to eat on the way to school.

If you get into a real bind and can't get anything to eat for a while, you can drink a Mountain Dew. There is enough sugar and caffiene to tide you over for a  couple of hours. I would definitely get some food as soon as you can afterwards.

Well I have been looking into getting a blender so I can make fruit smoothiesfor breakfast. I have food allergies, So I can not eat any dairy, wheat, oats, or yeast which makes breakfast and snack foods hard to find.

Today I acutally had some coffee, and that REALLY helped. I guess I will just have to go on a Starbucks & smoothie diet! haha

I am a little surprised that your doctor told you to play around with your doses. I am not sure I would like him/her for a doctor. Normally, you should take a medication for 2 weeks to get the full effect of the drug before adjusting the dose. If you are adjusting your dose every 3-4 days, your body must be confused.

You say you were tired and cranky in the afternoons, it sounds like rebound to me. Rebound occurs as your meds are wearing off. You tend to get tired and cranky because your blood sugar is low. I need to ask you a few questions, have you been eating regularly? Eating a high protein snack (turkey sandwich or chicken nuggets) in the afternoon afternooon should help you out. Look at it this way, you are out of gas. The meds suppress the desire for food (fuel for your body), but now in the afternoons your meds are running low and your body figures out that it doesn't have any meds or fuel.

My DS has been on Vyvanse for about 2 months now.  Thanksfully we didn't have any outburst or tears but a little bit of upset stomach along with loose stools for the first week.  The 20mg didn't seem to be helping at all so the Dr upped the med to 30mg, then 40mg and now 50mg.  DS says he's good at the 50mg but he's got a few side effects I don't think he realizes.  He makes strange throat noises and almost stutters when he's trying to talk.  I think the dose is too high and will consult with the Dr about going back down to 40mg.

By the way, it was an amazing moment when my 8 year old thanked me for figuring out what was wrong with him and then thanked me for putting him on meds to fix it.  He is getting along better with his peers, his teacher, who has an ADHD daughter, says he is showing huge improvement and he is just a joy to be around.  The first hour in the morning is still very difficult but the rest of the day is great.

He takes his pill at 7am and it begins to wear off around 7pm.

Adhdgirl,

Call around town and ask about it. I have had pharmacies tell me they did not stock it but could order it for me and get it in 2-3 days. I get my son's meds at Target and they are great. I had been going to a Walgreens but they always took forever to fill the precription and personally I just didn't have the time to wait for 30 minutes or more for a prescription.

I have found the vyvanse tends to work about 10 hours for my 13 year old son. We have better symptom control. It is a smoother transition and has less side effects than the Adderal XR. I notice it wearing off in the evenings. I notice it because he starts eating and he starts getting to be teenage boy goofy.

Vyvanse in now available in 10 mg increments from 20 mgs up to 70 mgs. the 20, 40 and 60 mg capsules just became available in September of the year.

Hi

I am a 30 yr old mother and have been using Addreall xr for a year.

I liked the results of the medication but I did notice I needed more and more to get the same effect.

I recently switched to the Vyvanse 50mg two days ago.

I defenitely do not feel as productive as I did on my other meds although I feel a smoother transition .

I am wondering if this may change after a few days and the medicaton will be more affective.

I was taking up to 50 mg of Adderall and now I am strarting at 50 mg of the Vyvanse

I just dont feel anyhthing & I  was in bed by 9:00 last night with wild dreams

If anyone who is an adult has some advice about Vyvanse I would really appreciate it!

My main reason for switching was the price the Adderall was costing me close to 200 a month.

I am getting the Vyvanse for free for the first month

Thanks for your time!

My son was on 30mg Vyvance and Zoloft for the anxiety. We upped the Vyvanse to 50mg after 1 year and it was horrible. He became so anxiety ridden and so defiant that last week we had to drop it back down to 30mg and so far he is better at home but still having problems at school. I am not sure what to do next.

We give it to him around 6am and now it is barely lasting a few hours. I used to give it at 5am because it lasted all 12 hours and he would not eat. now at least he is eating. I was thinking about adding stratterra. we have a couple of weeks to see how report cards go, I don't expect much out of this one. good luck to you.

I'm not a doctor or anywhere near qualified to go into what drugs work for kids.  But I was on Zoloft in college for a while.  I was prescribed Zoloft in an attempt to help my depression (which I didn't actually suffer from as I now know it is ADHD that has been my bane).  I have actually been on a few different antidepressents and Zoloft was by far the worst for me personally.  It made it almost impossible for me to want to get up and go to class or work or do anything but stay in bed and sleep when I wasn't bingeing and purging... (the bulimia became aggravated on the Zoloft also).

Perhaps your son is having a similar negative experience to the Zoloft and not as much to the Vyvanse?  It is just a thought.  Also, when I first started taking Vyvanse, I had more anxiety as the pill started to work and I have found that it helps me best if I wake up about an hour early to take my pill and then go back to sleep while it starts to work.  I also had decreased appetite for the first couple of weeks, but that wore off in time and my appetite now is much more normal.  I'm sure in little kids, they have different adjustment timeframes too.  And it might be too hard to get him to half awake take a pill and go right back to sleep for a bit longer, but that might help with the anxiety.

I hope this helps.

I used to give my son his meds at 7:00 am and then let him go back to sleep. He  would wake up within 45-60 minutes on his own. In fact he figured out that it woke him up and one morning during the summer he explained it to me as I tried get him to take his meds.I started my 6 year old son on Vyvanse 20mg
for the first time yesterday. This was his first
time on any medication ever. He was diagnosed
with ADHD thursday the 17th. I decided to wait
until a weekend day so I can watch his reaction.
I am SOO glad I made that decision. Although it
made a considerable difference in his hyperness
& attention...it also made him excessive talk
nonstop, as well as bite/chew his lip. I gave it to
him at 8:30 in the morning and he didnt go to
sleep until 2:30 in the morning. He had what I
know think was anxiety. He was talking aboit
not being able to sleep because he saw a moth
& had to watch for it and when I told him not to
worry about it he said he couldn't get it out of
his head. He had an emotional break down
about counting beads also, which he focused on
all day yesterday. He could not swallow the pill
so I mixed it with his yogurt. I read a post that it
made a difference if someone ate a bigger
breakfast on the side effects. So this morning I
mixed half of the pill with oatmeal and he didnt
end up eating it except for a bite or two. He is
his normal hyper self which after yestdrday I
am ok with. I am going to try the half a pill
tomorrow in his breakfast again & see how his
school goes.
Im hoping the side effects arent the same & do
go away soon or I will not continue to give him
the meds. The way he was acting last night
scared me way too much. For what its worth, I had similar side effects the first couple of days and they have subsided quite a bit. I do notice my anxiety is a bit higher than without the meds, but in my experience ADHD has caused much of my anxiety throughout my life in the first place. Good luck with your son...Im glad you're trying different things to see whats best. My husband of 30+ years has been taking 70mg of Vyvanse
for almost 3 years. Although it has done a remarkable
job of helping him to focus and make decisions at work,
after this long time we are beginning to realize that the
long term effects are serious, yet almost imperceptible
to the user. He has gradually yet entirely withdrawn
from his home life (the part of his day when the drug is
wearing off and he is crashing) and is entirely focused
on the work day. Because he feels good at work and bad
at home, he is convinced that home is bad. This is not
just about me, he is withdrawing and uninterested in our
kids too. This is a guy who previously would have done
anything for his kids, and now he appears to care about
no one but himself. I believe that he is starting to be
schizophrenic and certainly is showing manic behavior,
which are listed as potential side effects. There are
not studies on long term use of Vyvanse, but I urge
people to notice behaviors before you get to the point of
no return, which could be where we have arrived. Because
there are positive effects, it is extremely easy to miss
the negative effects, which in my husband's case he kept
entirely to himself. He is now in therapy to see if he
can determine what the initial underlying problem was,
because admittedly he probably did not have an extreme
case of ADHD and probably would have fared better on
anti-depressants. The doctor that prescribed the Vyvanse
didn't do a lot of research into determining his real
problem, just figured that they could try the Vyvanse and
if it worked, that was good. I think that one ought to
think very hard about using this drug for anyone, but
most definitely for anyone who tends to keep all of their
thoughts to themselves. Had he shared some of the things
that he was feeling earlier, it might have been possible
to recognize the influence of the drug.
It's a shame that the drug trials required by the FDA don't last for extended periods in order to at least get a sense of what people's experience is, over time, taking medications--especially those approved for adult use like Vyvanse.  Cost is most often used to explain why such long-term studies are not conducted, yet the drug companies are certainly not wanting financially.

Given the current "anti-regulatory" political climate, I suppose that leaves it up to us, the users, along with the health insurance conglomerates (who should care about whether or not the medications their enrollees take lead to further complications, and costs), to advocate for learning more about long-term effects.
