My son started on Adderall XR about 2 1/2 weeks. We started with 5 mgs, a week later went up to 10 and about 3 days ago went to 15 mgs. Honestly, I'm not sure if I'm seeing a difference or not. I know that sounds crazy, but he was never "extreme" with his ADHD symptoms before. Definitely very active and curious and busy, but he's still like that and I'm ok with it...I don't want HIM to change. However, he just started school on Wed and I'm not sure how his days are going (in terms of focus, self control, less impulsivity, etc). I can't ask his teacher b/c she's only had him for 3 days (the first three days he was on 15 mgs). If it were last year's teacher, I could ask if she sees a difference, but it's not. I ask him all the time if he feels any differently, if he feels like he can pay better attention, etc, but he pretty much says "I don't know" or "no, mom, stop asking". Should he feel differently????? I wish I could be a fly on the wall in the classroom but obviously I can't, so how do I know if we should stay at this dosage for a while or talk to the doctor again next week about going up?
PS~To anyone who reads this...thank you for all of your posts, information and support (both to me and to each other). I've only been on this site for a short time but now I read it every night. It's soooo helpful! Have a great weekend, everyone!
Does this years teacher know he has ADHD? If so I'd talk to her before your appointment and just ask how she feels he is. If he's ok, then don't up his dose. The whole point of ramping is to stay at the lowest dose to relieve symptoms. Good for you if he's happy and it's working .I haven't told her yet. I wanted her to get to know him and get a feel for him before having the change to "label" him...not that I expect that she would (I'm a teacher too and it doesn't matter to me if kids are add/adhd) but I just felt like I should give him some time with her first. However, I may call her next week and see how he is doing. I'll give him a few more days...from my experiences, kids are always on their best behavior for the first few days of school, even if it's killing them inside!
thanks!
oh absolutely they are.
If he's misbehaving or too distacted to work she'll tell you whether she knows his history or not.
