Long Term Effects of Adderall | ADHD Information
How do you regulate your dosing so that you don't increase it? I have recently started adderall and have read a lot about people quickly developing a tolerance, and therefore continuously upping their dose. I would not like to do this, and would appreciate any advice as to how to prevent this from happening.Does anyone know if Adderall XR is safe to take for...well, a long period of time? I've been on it for 6 years. SGTS3XY39333.9358217593If you are taking it as prescribed, there shouldn't be any issues. I have
been on it four 4 years w/o any problems.
You can always "google" a search on that question OR just ask your dr.The risks associated with adderall (regular or XR) are the same as with any other amphetamine-based stimulant. There is really very little difference between the latest compounds like vyvanse and the benzedrine people were taking in the 1920's. Really the only difference is in the delivery mechanism. For instance Adderall XR uses a time release capsule of sorts, whereas regular adderall is mixture of several different forms of amphetamines which absorb at different rates to give it a smoother feel over straight dextroamphetamine.
Either way once the stuff is absorbed by your body it is all eventually converted into the same thing, thus the effects on your body are largely the same across the board. And because this family of stimulants has been around for so long, the effects and risks associated with their use are very well researched and documented. This is one reason I will use dexedrine or adderall but would never take a compound like Straterra where the long-term effects are unknown.
If used properly and in low-doses, long term amphetamine use can be very safe, likely safer than heavy caffeine use or many other over the counter 'herbal' stimulants. The key is to regulate your usage such that you do not have to keep increasing your dose.

Adderall XR isn't through its patent years (patents last 7 years). So there is no way of knowing the long term effects of adderall xr, because it hasn't been around that long.
Adderall IR has been around a lot longer. I've heard of people taking it for 10+ years, but that was through message boards, no direct experience.
Your best bet is to look into long term ritalin effects. John F. Kennedy Jr. was taking ritalin from 20's to his late 30's, before he died in a plane accident (jfk jr., not the president).
It also depends on you. Some people can tolerate stimulants better than others. It doesn't have cocaine-like effects, so you don't have to worry about that. But make sure you keep your check ups with the doctors.

I have been on Adderall IR for almost a decade without problems. I take 20mg four times a day. = when I remember. I still forget ---->others notice before I do. Well so much for the scary addiction propaganda.
