Hi,
When my son first started with stims and he had trouble sleeping he tried 1 or 2 mg of sublingual melatonin. This did not work. The Dr. then put him on Clonidine which did work for sleep. For behavioral issues we switched to Tenex 1mg at night and .5 in the a.m. He could not sleep on the Tenex. So, I had him try 2 mg of liquid melatonin. WOW, it works great and he is asleep in 20 minutes. I don't know if liquid gets into their system quicker or why the liquid seems to work so well but it does. Try liquid if you can, it really seems to work. I found the liquid both at Longs Drug stores and GNC. Good luck.
My 7 yo ds is having trouble sleeping. It is affecting his behaviour the nextHi,
I forgot to add that I put the liquid in some great tasting juice. Hope this helps.
Hi! I'm a newbie -I just registered because I need to do something to help my 9 yr old sleep and saw this thread. She has had trouble falling asleep since school started the middle of August. How much melatonin would you give to a 9 yr old?
Thanks!!!
My2DD39337.3783449074babygonz, I would up the Melatonin to 5 mg first and see if that helps. Also talk to your doc, one of the side effects of zoloft is also insomnia. Valerian root is supposed to be helpful but tastes awful(even the kids one) and we found he wouldn't take it. I don't think 5mg is too high and it made a big diffefernce for us.We went for med check yesterday. I had already re-scheduled her appointment twice due to me being ill. It was the only appointment within a reasonable amount of time so I had to take it. It was at 1:PM. Needless to say, by 4:PM we had not seen the Dr. I found out she was taking Thurs and Fri of and had scheduled 32 patients for that day. I spoke withe the nurse and told her that DD had not had her Lexapro in about 2 weeks, due to my illness and I felt that she was better behaviorally with out it. She takes Concerta Mg and Tenex Mg in the morning and Mg at night. The only issue was she was not sleeping again. My DD has been staying up for the last month til about 11:PM or 12:AM. This is really exhausting as I am still recovering from my illness and do not have any energy. The nurse then prescribed her Melatonin Mg to take at night. They wrote the scripts out and had the Dr to sign. I just couldn't wait any longer. She wa with a new patient. I still had important things at work to get out the door and then be at my son's football pictures by 5:30PM. I got the scripts and headed to work , dd in tow. She was very well behaved, which was fortunate because I was stressing severely. We did not get out the door until 5:30PM, the exact time I was supposed to have my son dressed in full football gear for pictures at the football field which was 30 minutes away. Thankfully I had grabbed his Football clothes and put them in the car. He was supposed to have gotten his cleats and shoulder pads. I finally arrive and guess what, no shoulder pads or cleats. Yep !!!! After I asked him if he had them before we left for school. Thankfully the coach had a spare. So I am digging out my last few dollars for pictures and realize I still have to go pick up my DD medicine. So I change the picture package to just one 3 X 5 and 2 wallets, because I had to get DD's medicine. I balled my eyes out last night. I am still so bitter that I continue to struggle severely and my DD's father is not working and him and his wife are getting Medicaid and food stamps because she now pregnant and somehow the government thinks that's okay. It's okay for him to not take responsibility for the child he already has. Anyway, I just cried. So much of my time and energy is taken up by the treatment of my dd conditions. I feel so bad when I can not enjoy some of the pleasures of parenting especially when it comes to my son. It is so unfair. Unfair to him, unfair to me, and so unfair for my DD. Why???? That is what I m really dealing with now. Why did it have to happen to her? Well I guess I have rambled enough. Does anyone have any advice about sleeping and how long it will take to see an affect from the Melatonin?
