Craving ice can mean an iron deficiency. Call you pediatrician- he or she may want to do a quick blood test. If I remember correctly it's just a finger prick.
My older brother would freeze orange juice and eat it , kind of like orange flavored ice!I am the same way, A huge ice chewer actually crave it. I cant have it out of a ice tray though, it has to be the bagged kind. On bad weeks i can eat a small bag in 2-3 days. I was told the same thing low iron-anemic. Be careful to have him see a dentist. I have cracked teeth and broke fillings over it.
Sounds kind of weird, but my son will get a big glass of ice and chew on it whenever he can - just started past few months. I'm thinking I read somewhere it means a lack of some vitamin or mineral. Anyone heard this before? Maybe I'm thinking of some old "wive's tale".I use to do this when i was pregnant and my obgyn said it is a sign of low iron. have that checked.
I used to do this, but it can cause jaw alignment problems, so I stopped..

I am chomping on ice as I read this! I love ice a refreshing way to get more water.
Though, I, too, have cracked a tooth.
Our middle son use to do this as well and he was low in iron and also found out he was borderline anemicMy MIL does this. ANNOYING!! Crunch, crunch, crunch. It's a habit she picked up while trying to lose weight. She told me once that my FIL wanted her to stop because she ate a whole glassful the night before and my FIL made her take her temperature and "it was ten degrees below normal, so he was worried." I guess the fact that SHE WAS EATING ICE...WITH HER MOUTH...WHERE AN ADULT TAKES THEIR TEMPERATURE... didn't occur to them. Anyway, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Ice isn't as hard as hard candy, so the teeth should be okay, and it's better than being addicted to potato chips!!Thanks so much for all your input - I have had his iron checked and he's within normal limits and actually toward the higher side. Guess I'll let him chomp away...carefully, though!
I have heard that it is called PICA and is an iron deficiancy but it could be a habit. My husband does it and it drives me crazy.
I did this when I was in junior high for a period of time. I craved it like crazy. Eventually the craving just went away. My mom was concerned that I would destroy my teeth....
